  • Broadband set up times differ between providers
  • Set up problems you may encounter

When you set up a new broadband service in your home, the last thing you want to hear is that it will take two weeks to become activated. While your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can activate some plans within a few days, others can take longer to get going.

The amount of time it will take to setup a broadband service will be affected by a number of factors. Primarily, the type of plan you choose will affect how long it will take to setup. Naked DSL plans and plans which involve activating a home phone as part of the package will generally take longer. If you have signed up to activate an ADSL broadband plan only, this will be a little bit quicker (provided you already have an active home phone line).

Below is a rough guide to how long it takes to setup a broadband connection with some of the ISPs. These are approximate time frames only, and can be affected by a range of other factors. That being said, it is not uncommon to find that your internet connection is connected faster than you expected, however most ISPs will not be able to guarantee this will happen!

As soon as your modem/SIM is delivered, you can activate the service. Many providers do next day delivery, while others may take a couple of days to deliver your hardware.

Can it be done any quicker?

Generally, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) will not be able to fast track your internet connection.

However, there are some steps you can take to ensure your broadband arrives as soon as possible.

  • Many ISPs use direct debit as a payment option. If you set up your direct debit upon sign with a credit card (as opposed to a bank account) the payment will be processed sooner, which means your broadband is likely to become activated sooner. You should also ensure all payment details are correct, and there is enough money in the nominated account to avoid any delays.
  • You should also ensure that the address which you provide on the broadband application form matches the exact address which Telstra has on their database (even if you are only getting a broadband service connected). The addresses will need to match up exactly for the application to be processed. For example, Unit 1 will come up as an address mismatch if Telstra has on their database U1.
  • If you already have an existing broadband connection, it is worth checking to see if you can churn over straight to another provider. Churning means there will be a very minimal time that you are without the internet (usually only a few hours), and your plan may change over a little bit quicker. Churning to a new provider may also save you money on setup costs.
