I can't get Optus, do I have to get Telstra?

In Australia, Telstra and Optus own the copper wire infrastructure that supplies broadband and telephone services across Australia. This is why when searching for a good broadband or telephone deal, you may be told your property is connected to either Telstra or Optus lines.

However, that doesn't mean you are stuck with either of these companies for your phone and broadband needs. Many different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use Telstra, Optus or both companies to deliver their service.

Optus does not service as many homes and businesses as Telstra, so if you call Optus first, you may be told ADSL and cable is unavailable in your area, and you will have to get mobile wireless broadband.

However, while Optus services are unavailable to you, you could potentially receive ADSL through an ISP using Telstra's lines. Most broadband providers use Telstra lines so you should have plenty of choice available to you.

The best way to check is to call several different ISPs after speaking to Optus and ask if they can offer ADSL2+ in your area.

iiNet (1300 106 571), iPrimus (1300 137 794), TPG (1300 106 571) Dodo (1300 136 793) and Internode (1300 106 571) all use Telstra's lines to offer ADSL2+ to their customers.

I'm already with Telstra or Optus, is it hard to move?

It's not hard to move away from Telstra or Optus, as your new provider can take care of most of the process themselves. They may ask you to cancel your existing broadband service yourself but they will let you know exactly what you will need to do and keep you updated every step of the way.

If you want to move your phone service over to another provider and bundle your broadband and phone together, you will usually save money on your broadband. However, you may not be able to receive calls for a few days. Your new provider can tell you exactly what to expect. If you are keeping your phone, you won't have any interruption to this service.

I'm with Optus... do I have any other choice?


Alternatively, if the lines into your property are owned by Optus, you don't necessarily have to sign up with Optus for your internet plan. Exetel (1300 106 571), iPrimus and Dodo can often supply an internet connection over an Optus owned line.
