Optus is currently marketing a device to boost 3G mobile phone coverage within a home or office, called the Optus 3G Home Zone.
The gadget is aimed at Optus customers who have a decent fixed-line internet service like ADSL2+ but live in a 3G 'blackspot' and struggle to get 3G reception for their Optus mobile phone or mobile broadband device.
However, the 3G Home Zone will only work in the home, as the name suggests. This means that Optus customers in blackspot areas could use the device to improve their signal inside their home – up to five bars, according to Optus – but the signal will revert to normal once outside the range of the device.
The 3G Home Zone will work with both Optus mobile phones and Optus mobile broadband devices, creating a useable 3G signal within the home.
Who is it for?
It's certainly a good solution for customers who receive great Optus coverage just about everywhere except for their home or office.
However, mobile broadband users would be better using a Wi-Fi modem with their fixed-line connection to create a wireless broadband network at home.
The primary account holder can make unlimited local or national calls through the Optus 3G Home Zone. There will be three beeps before the call connects to let the user know they are connected. Any calls made outside the zone will be charged according to the user's mobile plan.
What do I need?
The device works by plugging directly into a fixed-line broadband service and connect sup to four simultaneous users.
It's important to note that the device will use up your broadband data allowance. The device also requires reasonably fast download and upload speeds to work.
Optus recommends, for peak performance, connection speeds of of 1Mbps (1000Kbps) download and 512Kpbs upload speeds.
If your broadband provider shapes your speed once you have exceeded your data allowance, you may find the device no longer works. Optus recommends checking the shaping speed with your provider, and only using the device if the shaping speed is 128kbps or greater.
How much does it cost?
For a limited time only, the Optus 3G Home Zone will be reduced to $5 per month for the life of the contract, on selected $59 and above mobile plans. Call Optus on 1300 137 897 for more information.
