Your best option is to see if any broadband providers can give you ADSL2+ in your location. This is the cheapest form of stable broadband, although it is also the fastest. This is the case because there is a lot of competition from multiple providers. ADSL2+ is mainly found in metropolitan areas, starting at a city’s centre and then moving outwards through the suburbs as each telephone exchange becomes enabled. Broadband providers choose to enable an exchange where they feel their investment will get a good return, so this usually means densely populated locations are sought after first. It’s arbitrary which broadband providers have enabled your phone exchange for ADSL2+, so it’s worth calling around. Telstra BigPond owns the main telephone infrastructure in Australia, so it can provide ADSL2+ in more locations than any other ISP (Internet Service Provider). However, generally speaking BigPond’s prices are less competitive than other companies. If you bundle your services and have your landline telephone and broadband through the same ISP, you’ll be able to get more data (GB) for your money. Many broadband providers shape their speeds when you reach your monthly download quota. The key is to ask to what speed they slow the connection down to. Shaping speeds can range from 64kbps (dial-up speed) to 4Mbps. There are a fair few broadband plans these days costing $50 or less per month, but which still have a lot of data included. For example: If you can get ADSL2+, for $39.99 TPG can give you 60GB, split 30GB in peak and 30GB during off-peak times. Bundled with a $30 phone line you can get TPG’s $19.99 per month 100GB plan, with 30GB in peak and 70GB in off-peak. If there is only ADSL1 in your area, for $49.99 you can get a bundle with iiNet on a 1,500kbps speed with 50GB in peak and 50GB in off-peak, plus $29.95 for the landline rental with 20-cent calls, or $31.95 for 17-cent calls. If you want to keep your phone with the current provider, you can get TPG’s 1,500kbps stand-alone broadband plan for $49.99 per month with 25GB in peak and 25GB in off-peak. There is also the option of saving some money by getting a little less data with iPrimus. iPrimus can provide a 1,500kbps connection for $40 a month with 20GB (10GB peak and 10GB off-peak) when bundled with a $30 landline rental.
