What is the best for connecting an Ipad 2 to the internet?

I have ADSL 2 for my main computer. Wayne.

Hi Wayne,

An iPad is WiFi compatible. That means that you can access your home ADSL2+ connection on it via a WiFi Enabled Modem. Basically what this modem does is take your internet and broadcast it in a WiFi zone around your house, where you can access it on computers, laptops, smartphones, and, of course, tablet devices like the iPhone.

It's important to protect your WiFi signal with a password so that your neighbours or people outside your house can't access your internet and use up your data. You can read more about securing your WiFi connection here.

You might already have a WiFi modem! A good way to tell is if it has antenna. If it does, chances are that you should just dig out your modem's manual and find out how to connect it to the internet, or call your provider – their tech support will be able to walk you through it.

If you don't already have a WiFi modem, you can buy one from an electronics store – they're usually around the $100 mark but you might luck out and find one on sale. Alternatively, if you're feeling ready to switch providers, you could look into some of these providers, who offer free WiFi modems on select plans.

However, you might be looking to take your iPad outside of your house. If you want to be able to access the internet on your iPad when you're out and about, rather than relying on being in places where you have access to public or opt in WiFi (e.g. your office, your school or university, etc.).

If so, you could look into getting a mobile broadband plan for your iPad. Mobile broadband works from mobile phone towers, rather than a fixed line connection, and as a result it's more temperamental than an ADSL connection. Speeds will be slower and the connection won't be as reliable. However, it is totally portable and you'll be able to take it and the iPad with you wherever you go – a fixed line connection at home, and a portable mobile broadband when you travel on public transport and go away with your iPad.
