I've just bought my first house and looking to get reliable internet and maybe some phone calls (tend to use mobile but if it wasn't too expensive to add calls I would consider it).
In the house there is a phone jack, however I think the line might not be active anymore...I certainly can't find a number for it (but don't have a handset that I can use to test the line). Thanks, Claire.

Hi Claire,
As long as you have the phone jack in the wall, that’s all that you’ll need for ADSL2+ internet. To access ADSL2+, you need to have an active telephone line regardless as to whether or not you wanted to use it. As such, you have two options available to you.
The first option is to go to Telstra or Optus and pay line rental for each month, then on top of that sign up for a standalone broadband plan. This ends up being a more expensive venture, as most internet providers will charge you more for not combining a phone with them because they do not wish to compete against a competitive company. The way to get around this is to sign up for a bundle plan- bundles incorporate the cost of both line rental and internet, meaning that you can save yourself a lot of money.
An example of this is TPG’s Unlimited plans. TPG unlimited internet as a standalone will cost you $59.99 a month but you will have to go to Telstra and sign up for line rental for around $30-40 per month extra. However if you sign up for a TPG unlimited bundle (incorporating both internet and line rental,) it would cost you the exact same price of $59.99.
There are plenty of companies that offer great bundles at the moment. Optus offers 120GB ADSL2+ broadband plan with a free modem for $79.00 a month on a 24-month contract. Dodo offers ADSL2+ Unlimited bundle for $62.80 per month on a 0-month contract.
Optus can be contacted on 1300 137 897, and Dodo can be contacted on 1300 136 793. TPG questions can be answered by the team at CompareBroadband on 1300 106 571.
