Hi Stephen,
I performed an initial check on the number you gave us and it appears ADSL2+ is available in your area from TPG at the Semaphore exchange.
There are a couple of reasons you could be on ADSL1 at the moment. The first is your provider has not enabled the exchange for ADSL2+, while other providers such as TPG have.
This would be a good result for you as it would mean you could switch to another provider and start enjoying faster broadband speeds.
On the other hand, you might be on an ADSL1 connection because there is an infrastructure issue. ADSL2+ is not suited to all telephone lines and if you have an issue such as a 'pair gain', ADSL1 will be your only option.
Unless you know of a specific problem, assume you can get ADSL2+ plans from TPG (and possibly other providers too) until you are told otherwise.
Given your use, I can recommend a few plans you might be interested in. If you like any of these plans, call the number provided and the provider can give you more information.
TPG offers a 100GB plan with 50GB in the peak and 50GB in the off peak, bundled with a home phone service, for $49.99 a month. This plan is the best match for your current data use. If you need more data, you can upgrade to the Unlimited plan, which costs $59.99 a month.
TPG does not include any call credit in this plan, although for an extra $5 a month, you can include all your local phone calls.
National calls cost 25c per minute (plus a 39c call connection fee), capped at $2 up to 20 minutes per call, per minutes national call rates thereafter. Mobile calls cost 39c per minute (plus a 39c call connection fee), capped at $2.48 up to 20 minutes per call, per minutes mobile call rates thereafter.
You could take a look at your current bill and compare these costs to see whether you will be better off paying for each call or getting a deal with included calls.
If you find you will be saving money on this plan, call Compare Broadband on 1300 106 571 and we can give you more details.
Alternatively, if you do make a lot of phone calls and want some included credit, I would recommend an Optus Fusion plan, such as Optus Fusion 120GB ADSL2+ plan, which includes 120GB of data to use anytime plus unlimited local and national calls, plus unlimited calls to Optus mobiles. This plan costs $79 a month, on a 24-month contract. Optus also offers a free ADSL2+ standard modem, which is ideal if you need to upgrade your modem.
Give Optus a call on 1300 137 897 for more details on this plan.
We can help you with any other questions, give us a call on 1300 106 571.
Hope this has helped,
Sarah
