I recently discovered an iPrimus internet plan of ADSL2+ with 50GB usage at $49.95 and am now thinking of making the switch, is this ISP good? and does it charge for excessive usage, or does the speed slow down (if so what is the capped speed?) Also, if I made the switch, would I need a new modem and would iPrimus need to come by my place and do any installations? Cheers,

You ask several questions, so I’ll attempt to answer in order of their sequence. iPrimus is a reputable broadband internet company whose majority of call centres for customer service and technical support are based onshore in Australia. There are no excess charges on iPrimus ADSL2+ plans; your connection will be slowed down to 256kbps.

The plan you are looking at costs $49.95 for 100GB, split 50GB in peak and 50GB in off-peak. You should be aware that if you bundle your landline together with iPrimus’s $29.95 home phone line rental, the broadband price will be reduced to $39.95 a month.

If you are just changing your ADSL2+ provider no one will need to come to your home, and the chances are as your landline phone is already active, even if you went for the bundle deal you’d still be able to make the change without a technician coming to your property.

If you already have an ADSL2+ modem you can still use the older device. You’ll just have to reconfigure it with your new user name and password that you receive from iPrimus. However, if you are currently on an ADSL1 connection and have an old modem it may not be ADSL2+ compatible. In this instance your best option would be to buy a modem through iPrimus. iPrimus reduces its modem and set-up fees when you sign up to the longer contract.

For example, the set-up on a 12-month contract costs $59, while it’s waived completely on the 24-month plan. The ADSL2+ 4-port Wi-Fi modem router costs $119.95 on the 12-month plan, whereas it costs $89.95 on the longer contract. Similarly, the 1-port ADSL2+ modem costs $49, or $29 on the 24-month contract. All modems have an associated $9.95 delivery fee.

Note: I am presuming your current provider uses the Telstra infrastructure. If you are currently with a company that uses the Optus network you may need to disconnect the current phone and broadband connections before getting the new one installed. In this instance a technician would need to come to your residence to ensure the phone line is functioning well. Call iPrimus on 1300 137 794 for more details, or sign up to the plan here: iPrimus stand-alone ADSL2+ $49.95 100GB plan.
