I need broadband but do not really need a home phone.
I’m renting for 6 months so I don’t want a contract of any great length. My guess is around 10 GB per month, but I do have a 16 year old, so I need a speed good enough to run Xbox online. Also watching the dollars.

If you’re after a cheap short-term contract, TPG has home phone and broadband plans which include large amounts of data. Even though you don’t need a home phone, TPG’s bundles are cheaper than most Naked DSL plans, even including the $30 home phone line rental.
TPG (1300 106 571) has an ADSL2+ $39.99 plan (including the phone line rental) which offers 5GB from 9am-1am (peak), and 5GB from 1am-9am (off peak). If this isn’t enough, you could sign up for the $49.99 TPG deal which includes 30GB during peak hours and 70GB during off peak hours.
The setup fee on the TPG six-month contract is $129.95. If you don’t yet have a modem to use with ADSL2+ broadband, TPG has a WiFi modem for $149.95 (including delivery).
If the TPG plan isn’t available in your area, you could also try giving iPrimus a call on 1300 137 794 as they have a Naked DSL plan for $49.95, which gives you 20GB during peak hours and 20GB during off peak hours. Naked broadband plans require an ADSL2+ connection, and it means you won’t have an active home phone – therefore you won’t need to pay phone line rental each month.
If you don’t have ADSL2+ available at your exchange, unfortunately you will still need to have an active phone line to get ADSL1 broadband. In this case it will probably be cheapest to bundle your home phone and broadband together. You could try iiNet (1300 106 571) or Clubtelco (1300 138 155) for cheap ADSL1 broadband and home phone bundle plans on a month-to-month contract.
