I currently have a prepaid dongle thing and the connection always drops out and is extremely slow.

I am after something that will allow more than one pc or laptop in the home to be on the net at the same time without wires everywhere? Belinda

Hi Belinda,

It sounds like you are after wifi on a fixed-line connection, such as ADSL, ADSL2+ or cable broadband.

All you need to create a wifi network in the home is a broadband plan and a wifi modem.

At Compare Broadband, we recommend customers try and find an ADSL2+ plan first, as ADSL2+ is relatively cheap, there is a wide range of plans to choose from, and the connection is fast and reliable compared to mobile broadband (what you have at the moment).

If for some reason ADSL2+ is not available, ask about ADSL plans instead. While slower and more expensive than ADSL2+, ADSL is still more reliable and faster than mobile broadband.

As you are accustomed to mobile broadband, you may want to start with a relatively light ADSL2+ plan. You can always move up to a higher plan if you find you are using all your data free of charge with the following providers. There are also no fees for using extra data, as these providers will shape (slow down) your connection instead.

Light ADSL2+ plans

TPG has a very cheap entry-level plan, offering 20GB of data for just $9.99, split 10GB in the peak and 10GB in the off peak. This is only available as a bundle, so you will also have to sign up to a phone service with TPG, which costs $30 a month.

TPG phone costs are very competitive, and for an extra $5 a month you can receive unlimited local calls. On the other hand, if you don't use your landline, this is still a good price for fast, reliable internet.

TPG offers two different contracts on this plan; six months and 18 months. There is a one off set-up fee to pay, $99.95 for the six-month contract or $79.95 for the 18-month contract.

Give us a call on 1300 106 571 for more details or to sign up to this plan.

No-contract plans

If you have been using prepaid, you may prefer to avoid long contracts. iiNet offers ADSL2+ bundle plans (bundling your home phone and your broadband service is usually the cheapest option) on a month-to-month contract, so you are not locked into a plan.

iiNet offers a 10GB plan for $29.95 a month when bundled with a $29.95 phone line. There is a set up fee of $79.95 on this plan. Give iiNet a call on 1300 106 571 for more details.

Both of these providers offer wifi modems, or you can buy your own and configure it yourself.

Hope this helps,

Sarah
