Hi Maggie,
Streaming TV shows requires a fast internet connection, especially if you want to view them in HD. A fast speed is not as important for Skype audio calls, but video calls are much better on a faster connection.
I would recommend either an ADSL2+ or cable connection for these applications. ADSL2+ is usually cheaper, and is available in more areas, but you can call Optus on 1300 137 897 to find out if your home is eligible and to enquire about prices.
I don't have enough information to say whether ADSL2+ is available in your area but if you call these providers and all you can access is ADSL, ask for an 8,000kbps speed.
Internode, iiNet, Spintel, Westnet and iPrimus all offer ABC iView unmetered, which means streaming TV shows will not count towards your data quota. This is very useful as it means you can sign up to a smaller, cheaper plan and still enjoy unlimited iView.
iPrimus offers a cheap light plan, with 40GB for $29.95 when bundled with a $29.95 home phone line. This plan is offered on 12-month or 24-month basis. Call iPrimus on 1300 137 794 for more details.
If you prefer short-term broadband plans, iiNet offers 20GB for $29.95 with a $29.95 home phone service on a month-to-month contract (split 10GB in the peak and 10GB in the off peak). Call iiNet on 1300 106 571 about this plan.
If you want to include some calls, Spintel has a great value ADSL2+ bundle. For just $39.95 a month, Spintel offers 20GB of data anytime, line rental and 50 free local calls every month. Call Spintel on 1300 381 277 for more information or to sign up.
Internode plans may also be available in your area. Internode consistently tops polls for customer satisfaction and ADSL2+ bundle plans start from $29.95 a month for 30GB when bundled with a home phone service. Call us on 1300 106 571 for Internode plans.
Hope this has given you a few more options,
Sarah
