I'm going to Townsville for seven weeks and need reliable fast broadband access for that period – what are my options?

Hi Clive,
Initial checks show that you can get ADSL1 broadband. I would recommend opting for a plan which is on a month-by-month contract so that when you leave you won’t have to pay a disconnection fee. With ADSL1 broadband, unfortunately you will need to activate a home phone line to get fixed-line broadband, so it will be important to bundle your services together to get a cheaper deal.
Dodo offers cheap ADSL1 plans and they also offer flexibility when it comes to contract length. They offer two speeds for regional customers (depending on availability), with the price of course being higher for the faster speed. There are 1.5Mbps plans (generally at least fast enough to stream video and use services like Skype), or 8.1Mbps plans (fast enough to download TV shows and movies).
Dodo home phone and broadband plans – 8.1Mbps (price includes home phone)
$64.80 500MB (peak) + 500MB (off peak)
$74.80 5GB (peak) + 15GB (off peak)
$89.80 Unlimited
On a no term contract there is a $99 set-up fee which also includes a new modem.

If the idea of getting a home phone for less than two months doesn’t appeal to you, then the other option is to get mobile broadband. However, you have specified that you need something fast and reliable, and most mobile broadband services can be unstable at times particularly during heavy traffic periods (such as during the evenings and weekends). This means you’ll need to sacrifice internet speed for a cheap plan which is contract-free and you won’t be required to activate a home phone. I’d recommend the following providers:
Virgin mobile: 1300 106 571
Amaysim: 1300 763 813
I hope this answers your question. If you would like any further advice, please give us a call on 1300 106 571.
