I need to get internet for the home.

I have new smart tv and a few laptops that get utilised. Is ADSL2 the best for having multiple connections and what do you recommend as the best plan. The internet usage is not high currently but that could change once i see the full potential of the samsung smart tv. Cheers

Hi Anthony,

For multiple connections like this, you're going to need to set up a home Wi-Fi network, which means you'll be able to use the internet from any compatible device in any room in the house without having to plug it into a modem. There are a couple of things to make sure of when getting ready to create your own Wi-Fi network:

  1. Make sure you have a compatible modem. A Wi-Fi enabled modem could be called a couple of things: wireless modem, Wi-Fi modem, Wi-Fi modem router, etc. Just check with whomever you're buying it from that you're able to use it to set up a Wi-Fi network. The clue will be that it should have a little antenna.
  2. Don't forget to set up a username and password. This will secure your connection and stop neighbours from being able to use your internet.
  3. Be prepared for the fact that having multiple connections running at once may make your internet speed a little slower than you would like. You can minimise this by shutting down unnecessary programs and saving heavy downloads to run overnight, while you're sleeping and don't need fast internet.

ADSL2+ is indeed one of the best types of internet connection to use for Wi-Fi, because it's fast and simple, although it might also be worth considering cable if you can get it in your area. It sounds like you're well aware that your usage might increase – I'll give you some middle-ground options along with some higher ones, but keep in mind that most if not all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will let you upgrade without charging a fee if you find that you're not getting enough data for your needs. Just watch out for Dodo, who will charge you for excess use, as opposed to other ISPs who will just slow your internet down once you've gone over your data usage for the month.

TPG's best deal is definitely their Unlimited Home Phone Bundle. For $59.99/month you can get unlimited internet along with your home phone line rental, although it doesn't include the cost of calls. For more information about TPG, or to sign up, call us on 1300 106 571.

If not getting locked into a contract is more important to you than lots of data, you could try Club Telco's ADSL2+ 10GB Plan. With no set-up fees and no long term contracts, the Club Telco deal is very attractive, and you can give them a call to find out more on 1300 138 155.

If you just want to shop around, here are some providers we can recommend – ask them about the best deal for you.

Dodo: 1300 136 793
Eftel: 1300 106 571
SpinTel: 1300 106 571

If you have any other questions, you can give us a call on 1300 106 571.

Mikaella.

Hi Charles. Most ISPs are going to need ten working days to set up a home phone bundle, yes; you're looking at two weeks - not as bad as a month, but still a bit of a wait. The reason it's so long is that there are thousands of people who want to sign up to ADSL2+ every day, so there's quite a long waiting list, and when you're getting a bundle connected a technician actually needs to go around to visit your house. The phone line means just that - the copper line that goes from the telephone exchange to your house to connect your phone and internet. It does not include your handset. Be careful to check whether or not a modem actually is part of the deal or whether you'll need to call us separately. For more information, give us a call at 1300 106 571.

Hi, I just moved into a new apartment with a phone port available and I need a fast internet at home so that I can connect my laptop, Ipad, etc. From my previous usage I think 50 to 100 GB is sufficient per month. I just spoke to a rep from Dodo and i'm made to understand that connection for an ADSL2+ takes up to a month but I need it urgently. Is it the same with every other ISP? Also most of the plans from ISPs i've looked at includes a phone line and modem (some wireless). Does this phone line mean the phone hardware itself? What extra should one consider buying separately for an ADSL2+ connection and if it can be self-installed why does Dodo take 14 to 28 days to install it? Thanks
