I am with Dodo at the moment, for just a few days more unless they fix my speeds. Who can provide me with a 200 GB plan that doesn't drop out every afternoon, in country Victoria? For $60 or less?

Hi Donald,

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) who promises great speeds and a stable connection and then refuses to live up to them once you've signed your contract can be a source of great frustration. However, more often than not it can be a more complicated issue which isn't entirely under the ISP's control. So while it might be that Dodo has made you furious over the course of your contract, it might not necessarily be Dodo's fault.

Your connection speeds and stability will depend very much on the distance from your telephone exchange. If you are over three kilometres away, your speeds aren't going to be the high-powered broadband we imagine; if you're over four, you might have difficulty getting a stable, fast connection at all. Unfortunately, in regional areas, this is especially true. Hopefully the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) will go some way to stopping this, but until then, you might be stuck with slow internet simply because of where you live.

There are, of course, other factors: how many people are also using Dodo ports around your area is an example of one. So is how scattered the signal might be around your house. And while we say that all ISPs are going to offer you the same speed no matter who you sign up with, the reality is that different factors can influence the quality of the broadband connection an ISP can give you. My advice would be to try out a different ISP and see if the quality improves. You could also consider going on a 0-month contract, so you won't be trapped in a long contract if you find you don't like the service.

The following providers can give you short contracts:

Optus: 1300 136 793
Club Telco: 1300 137 897
Internode: 1300 106 571

I'd also recommend TPG, if you don't mind being on a contract. TPG's Unlimited Broadband + Home Phone Bundle will give you unlimited data for $59.99/month – a pretty good deal! To discuss this plan more and find out if it's available in your area, give us a call on 1300 106 571.

I hope this helps!

Mikaella.

Hi Kerry - 9.3km is a very long way from a telephone exchange to still be able to get ADSL. Are you sure that Dodo said you could get ADSL1 or 2+, and not mobile broadband instead? Mobile broadband is the USB stick you put into your computer when you want to go online; it works off mobile phone towers and so may be more useful in your area if you can get phone reception. It's worth calling Dodo (1300 136 793) to ask them to clarify, or you can chat to us (1300 106 571) to further explain your situation.

Com-letely ignore dodo and sign up with tpg. I pay 59 per month for 200gb, very occasionally will be a short dropout but the service is mostly consistently fast. I also changed from dodo, the word support just isnt in there dictionary.
