• What are the different types of broadband connections available in rural/remote areas?
  • Find an option that works best for you, depending on what is available

Accessing reliable rural Internet plans in regional areas has long been a challenge for Australians. While urban areas enjoy extensive mobile and fixed-line networks, regional communities have often faced limited options, widening the digital divide.

This has previously made it difficult for regional homes and businesses to access quality rural Internet services.

If you live in a regional area and are searching for available Internet options, you understand the importance of a reliable connection. In today's world, Internet access is no longer a luxury but a necessity for everyday life.

Fortunately, residents in regional areas are not always limited to slower NBN services, either. Many now have access to broadband plans offering fast, super-fast, and ultra-fast speeds, providing better Internet options for regional users.

National Broadband Network (NBN)

Your first point of call when looking for a new broadband connection is the NBN. It’s aimed at providing a faster and more reliable rural Internet connection.

For those of you who are located in rural areas, you will most likely have the availability of a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.

4G/5G and Mobile Broadband

Telstra leads the way in mobile broadband coverage across Australia, offering a fast Internet connection through the mobile phone network.

With approximately 98% coverage for mobile broadband of the population in Australia and 75% for 5G, Telstra provides extensive network reach. Optus and Vodafone also compete strongly, with 4G coverage extending to 97.3% and 96.9% of the country, respectively.

Factors such as terrain and home infrastructure can affect your service, so it's important to check coverage before choosing a mobile broadband plan.

Satellite Broadband

If mobile broadband isn't an option in your area, satellite broadband could be an alternative. The National Broadband Guarantee offers government assistance for satellite broadband installation costs.

However, keep in mind that satellite broadband can be more expensive than other options. It's also susceptible to weather conditions and cloud coverage, which may affect its reliability.

The Sky Muster satellite service delivers the NBN network to regional and remote areas across mainland Australia, Tasmania, and islands like Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Lord Howe Island, and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

To set up a Sky Muster satellite connection, you'll need a roof satellite dish and an NBN-supplied modem installed at the entry point of the cable from the dish.

Only an NBN-approved installer can set up this equipment, so your phone and Internet provider should arrange for a visit to connect you to the NBN.
