Titan Fibre Networks, a new fibre network investor, revealed its plans to build on an existing Sunshine Coast-Brisbane network. The company also has set its goal to expand to the Gold Coast and northern NSW. The investor is the owner of Torus Networks-built networks linking the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane. 

Titan is now planning its next build called Eos. It is a new high-count open access wholesale dark fibre backhaul cable, which will be an additional infrastructure between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The infrastructure is said to complement the Helios Brisbane-Sunshine Coast 140km backhaul cable.

Former Vocus executive and Senior Microsoft Matthew McDonough is now appointed as the new CEO of Titan Fibre Networks.

According to the CEO, “Torus Networks is designing, building and operating fibre backhaul networks, via nominated carrier declaration, for Titan.” 

“My initial focus will be on our Brisbane to Sunshine Coast, Brisbane to Gold Coast builds and future fibre infrastructure projects," he further added.

Design works and feasibility to continue the Titan Fibre Network and expand onto Lismore are currently being undertaken.

According to McDonough, Titan can manage its builds differently with Digital Infratech’s support.

“We don't need to go to customers to justify our builds; we’re doing it within underserviced locations and routes - and filling voids in those markets - rather than the other way around, which is what all the other carriers are doing,” he said. 

“We don’t have to wait for the customer before proceeding on these networks.”

McDonough was previously the GM wholesale at Vocus. “I joined the Digital Infratech and Titan Fibre Networks businesses to sink my teeth into the diverse mix of businesses,” he said. 

“Titan Fibre Networks has some fantastic attributes to build on. The focus on open access and diverse fibre networks appeals to me, especially in South East Queensland. Previous roles have shown that geographic diversity is becoming more important for fibre network users and open access is vital for the wholesale market.”

“I’ll be using the expertise of telco and, more recently, in the OTT space to work out where there’s some missing pieces,” he said. 

“The way carriers potentially build out their networks isn’t necessarily the best way that hyperscalers might want to utilise it.”

He also revealed that Digital Infratech has “a swathe of projects” it is currently investigating and that further announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
