Are you and your household ready to connect to the NBN? If you haven’t already signed up for a plan, it’s worth considering one from Optus. Fortunately, this telco has made it easy for customers to choose a plan. Instead of sifting through a large catalogue and comparing prices, you just have to make a few choices along the way.

You’ll be pleased to know you can choose between 24-month plans and no-contract ones. Although their entry-level prices are higher than those of many other providers currently in the market, it’s worth noting that Optus has other features such as an Optus Sport subscription - if that’s something you’d like to invest in - 4G backup, or a Fetch TV subscription.

Given that, here’s an overview of the Optus NBN plans that offer the best value.

Different Speeds

When shopping around for your NBN plan, remember that Optus offer four speed tiers for customers to choose from. The first one, NBN 50 (Standard), is good for families with up to four people on multiple devices. The second one, NBN 100 (Fast), is the best choice as far as concurrent internet use is concerned. For those who need really fast internet speeds, the third and fourth speed tiers - NBN 250 (Superfast) and NBN 1000 (Ultrafast) - are your best bets.

Remember, though, that those numbers are the maximum speeds; that means your speed won’t always get that high, especially in the evening during peak usage hours - between 7 and 11pm. However, the upside is, even though typical evening speeds trail behind the maximums, carriers have improved their offerings, so the difference won’t be that significant.

Different Plans in Review

If your household has up to four people all using multiple devices but not always at the same time, Optus NBN 50 plans are a good place to start, and can reach evening speeds of 50Mbps. This is true even if you enjoy streaming movies in HD or 4K, play a lot of online games, or work from home. Optus Internet Everyday and Optus Family Internet Ultimate are good contenders at $75 each month, at least 50GB of data, and a minimum cost of $174. However, the latter edges ahead a little thanks to the price discount on your first six months.

If most people in your household use the connection at the same time, 50Mbps may not be fast enough - and, obviously, Optus NBN 100 plans are the next step up. You can choose from among Optus Internet Everyday 100, Optus Internet Gamer 100, and Optus Family Internet Ultimate 100. All three typically have evening speeds of 100Mbps, come with at least 50GB of data, no contracts, and have price discounts for the first six months.

Of the three, Internet Everyday 100 is the cheapest at $85 per month and a minimum cost of $184, and Internet Ultimate 100 is the most expensive at $95 per month and a minimum cost of $194.

Now, if you’re looking for ultrafast internet or just find yourself downloading big files a lot, you could look at NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plans. With the former, typical evening speeds can go up to 215 Mbps, while the former can reach evening speeds of 250Mbps, with speeds of up to 1Gbps outside of peak usage hours.

However, these plans aren’t available for everyone. For NBN 250 plans, you’ll need a FTTP or HFC NBN connection, while only FTTC addresses and a little over half of HFC addresses can get NBN 1000 plans. If you still want to know how much you’ll be shelling out, here’s what you need to know.

At the NBN 500 speed tier, the Optus Internet Everyday plan goes for $110 per month, with a minimum cost of $209, and a $20 discount to upgrades for certain speed packs for six months. The Optus Internet Everyday plan at the NBN 1000 speed tier offers the same discount and goes for $130 per month, with a minimum cost of $229.

Other Details
