iPrimus to charge excess on mobile broadband plans

iPrimus will charge mobile broadband customers for excess data, but has cut the cost of its 1GB plan to $15 a month.

iPrimus was one of the only internet service providers to slow down customers' mobile broadband connections once they reached their download quota for the month.

On the new Speedster plans, excess data is charged at 3 cents per MB, up to a maximum of 200MB, capped at $60. After this, the connection speed will be reduced to 128Kbps for the remainder of that billing month.

The 1GB plan now costs $15 and the 6GB plan costs slightly less than before at $39 a month. iPrimus has also introduced a 2GB plan for $25.

Customers can sign up for a 12-month or 24-month contract. On the 12-month contract, iPrimus offers a Huawei E160E modem for $49, but it’s free on the longer contract. A $9.95 delivery fee also applies.

Customers who are looking for a mobile broadband plan that does not charge an excess fee could now look at Optus or Virgin. Virgin Mobile broadband customers who exceed their data limit for the month will see their speed limited to 128Kbps for the next 250MB. Use more, and your service will be unavailable until the first day of your next usage period, unless you purchase a data top-up (there is a maximum of three per month).
