• Why Choose Optus Over Other ISPs?
  • Best Optus NBN Plans in Australia
  • What Are Optus Perks?

Optus is the second-biggest telco in Australia with over 1 million subscribers across the nation, and the recently proclaimed best broadband service provider by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Of the total number of its customers, a good percentage are those who consider themselves binge-watchers. This is due in part to Optus ranking first in the industry when it comes to Netflix speed.

Similar to Telstra, basic plans from Optus typically start at $75 per month, meaning it is also not the best choice for customers who are looking for affordable data plans. But what makes it a solid choice compared to its market rivals is the wide selection of entertainment options and the Optus Perks program.

If you are on the hunt for a new NBN provider, you might want to check out what Optus has to offer in this article.

What makes Optus stand out from others?

As one of the largest telcos in Australia, Optus has the ability to offer a wide range of products and services to customers other than its NBN plans. This is great for customers who prefer having a lot of options at their disposal. It’s convenient if you want to switch to another plan without necessarily changing your service provider.

And when you choose to sign up with Optus, you get to choose from a wide selection of features for your NBN plan.

  1. All NBN plans come with unlimited data.

  2. A variety of NBN speeds available — Standard Plus Evening Speed NBN 50, Premium Evening Speed NBN 100/20, Premium evening Speed NBN 100/40.

  3. Several technology types — FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, HFC, and fixed wireless connections

  4. Entertainment bundles — Customers have the option to add Optus Sport and Fetch TV on their bundle plans for a minimal fee of $15 a month.

  5. Modem choices — Customers are eligible for a premium Wi-Fi modem with any Optus NBN plan

  6. Call Packs — Optus offers an optional phone line service on NBN plans while unlimited standard national calls to Australian mobiles and landlines only cost an extra $10

  7. No lock-in contracts — All Optus NBN plans are contract-free and can be availed on a month-by-month basis. Customers only need to pay setup fees to get the connection

Optus NBN Speeds

Internet speed is one of the biggest factors for customers when choosing a service provider. For Optus, the Internet Everyday (NBN 50) plans can deliver a maximum download speed of 50 Mbps and a typical evening speed of 44 Mbps.

Its Internet Everyday and Premium Evening Speed (NBN 100) plans, meanwhile, deliver a maximum download speed of 100 Mbps and a typical evening speed of 80 Mbps. These speeds apply to all fixed-line connections offered by the brand (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, and HFC).

Other Optus Products

Aside from the basic inclusions in your Optus NBN plans, customers are also given the option to avail of other add-ons to the bundle.

Optus Call Rates & Packs

For those who are subscribed to the basic Internet Everyday and Internet Entertainer plans, Optus only includes pay-as-you-go (PAYG) calls to the bundle. If you think this might not be enough, you can upgrade your plan inclusion to unlimited standard national calls to mobiles and landlines by availing the $10 call pack.

Optus’ PAYG rates are currently at:

  • 28c per minute plus 52c flag fall for mobiles and national lines

  • 30c each for local calls

  • 35c each for calls to 13/1300 numbers

Optus TV by Fetch

If you prefer having more than just data allowance in your plan and you’re not the unlimited call type, you might want to add a Fetch TV to your plan instead.

A Fetch TV package is included in the Optus Internet Entertainer plans but you also have the option of getting the Fetch Mini package if you have a smaller NBN plan. You just need to add $5 to your monthly invoice.

Customers who avail of the Fetch TV bundle will get a top box set that allows you to watch free-to-air television and streaming services such as Netflix and Stan. The device also gives you the ability to record and rewind live TV as well as buy or rent movies and shows.

A total of 4 channel packs are available — Kids, Knowledge, Vibe, and Variety — with each pack valued at $6.

Optus Perks

Optus Perks is not a device but a rewards program for customers. Those who sign up are given access to discounted movie tickets, events, restaurants, and other entertainment rewards from Optus’s partner establishments.

Should you switch to Optus?

As with any other NBN service providers, making the switch always depends on a variety of factors.

Optus offers all types of fixed-line networks imaginable, meaning it’s highly likely that their services are available in your area. All Optus NBN plans also include unlimited data and they won’t tie you down with lock-in contracts.

Factoring all these things in, the monthly fee is the only one left to be considered. Are you willing to spend anywhere between $75 and $120 for an NBN plan with premium speed? If your answer is yes, then Optus might be an option for you. But if you want to explore more of what the market has to offer, read this comparison of NBN broadband plansfrom other providers.
