As movies and TV shows have moved to streaming services and platforms, Aussies who love sports feel like they have been left behind. To be fair, the number of streaming and video on-demand services that cater to sports fans is limited--at least in Australia. In different countries abroad, online sports streaming is a huge business.

Nevertheless, sports is still huge in the country. For one, there’s free to air TV that delivers the significant sports game straight to our home for free. Moreover, a dedicated sports streaming service, Kayo Sports, has launched in Australia.

With that comes the question: which is the better choice?

What is Kayo Sports?

Kayo Sports is a streaming service dedicated to showing sports games. It’s the standalone service from Foxtel, which is perfect for those who want to access Foxtel Sports without having to spend the minimum $54 monthly fee.

Sports fans could access a library of over 50 sports through the online streaming service, including the matches, interviews, match commentaries, and documentaries on-demand.

The streaming service has a few great features that sports fans will love.

For example, it comes with the SplitView feature, which allows you to watch multiple matches simultaneously on one screen. This is a great feature, so you won’t have to fight with your sibling whose turn it is to watch. The streaming service also has the “key moments” feature, which shows viewers where to find the best moments of the match. Plus, it gives “no spoilers” as it blocks the scores when you’re browsing the menu.

If you’re watching from your computer, Kayo Sports also has a pop-out player. Basically, it shows a small screen on the lower right of your screen so you can multitask and watch your favourite sports while working or surfing the internet.

There are tons more features available on the streaming service, including multiple camera angles, a personalised menu, match centre, Kayo Minis, Interactive graphics, and more.

How Much Does the Service Cost?

Compared to Foxtel Sports, Kayo Sports is a much cheaper alternative.

There are two price tiers: $25 per month and another $35 per month package. The Basic subscription tier allows you to watch on two screens simultaneously, while the Premium subscription will enable you to watch on three screens at the same time.

Remember, watching on two or three screens is different from SplitView. You can watch two or more sports at the same time using the feature, but it’s still counted as one screen.

Besides the screen changes, there isn’t much difference between both price tiers. The package you choose won’t affect the quality of what you’re watching. Nevertheless, Kayo Sports only offers Full HD 1080p at the moment. However, it won’t be surprising if they offer 4K content soon.

New subscribers will get a 14-day trial. It can help you assess whether the app is for you or not.

Compatible Devices

Kayo Sports is compatible with both iOS and Android devices as well as on computers via Chrome, Safari, or Firefox browsers. It also works with a variety of smart TVs with an Android TV OS 7.1 or above. You can also use the following streaming devices:

  • Apple TV (4th Generation)
  • Telstra TV
  • Google Chromecast

If you’re watching via streaming devices, note that you might miss out on the app’s SplitView feature, which is only available on Apple TV as of the moment. Moreover, you can only split your screen two ways when using a smartphone, while a tablet allows you to split four ways.

Unfortunately, the app is not available on gaming consoles yet, but it won’t be surprising if they add it to Sony PlayStation 4 or Microsoft Xbox One soon enough.

What’s on Kayo Sports?

Kayo Sports has an extensive library of a variety of sports. The company has a partnership with ESPN, so Aussie fans can check out international programming along with local favourites.

What is Free to Air TV?

Free to air TV is basically the traditional way of watching shows: through television channels.

Unlike streaming services, free to air TV is only available on TVs, whether a smart TV or a normal one. That means you really can’t bring it anywhere--although many places these days have access to a TV, including pubs, restaurants, and even on buses.

Each show, whether pre-recorded or live, has an allotted schedule. Most of the time, you would not be able to go back to watch a show if you missed it. You also can’t pause or play backward and forwards.

But in these days and times, you can most certainly catch shows again as they are typically shown a few times a day or a few times a week for those who weren’t able to catch them the first time.

How Much Does it Cost?

As the name suggests, you won’t be paying for anything else, which is the beauty of this type of service.

What’s on Free to Air TV?

Unfortunately, the amount of sports on free to air TV is slowly dwindling, especially during the past few years, as online streaming has become the new normal. Nevertheless, it tends to cover major international sports events, including the Olympic Games.

Here are more sports that you can watch on free to air TV:

  • AFL
  • NRL
  • Australian Grand Prix
  • Cycling
  • Horse racing
  • Super netball

Which is better?

Both choices are great for any sports fan. Some would love free to air TV more since it costs nothing, and if you’re into one specific sport only that streams on free to air TV, why bother to pay $25 each month for a streaming app?

Nevertheless, those who can’t find what they like on TV can definitely pay for Kayo Sports. With the extensive sports they have and the app’s features, it’s definitely worth the price if you have extra money.
