The era of disks has gone, and now, entertainment has become digital through streaming services. People around the world could now catch and watch their favourite shows and movies using their smartphones or tablets.

However, these platforms best work on smart TVs as the companies behind them have created dedicated apps for this device. But what if you don’t own a smart TV? Or what if your smart TV’s interface isn’t as friendly as you like?

Luckily, there are streaming devices such as Amazon Fire TV Stick.

What is an Amazon Fire TV Stick?

An Amazon Fire TV stick is a streaming device that allows you to watch streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Stan, Binge, Foxtel Now, and so much more. It’s often used for non-smart TVs that do not have access to the internet and these services’ dedicated apps.

Basically, it houses all these services into one place and works by plugging it into your TV’s HDMI port.

These types of devices are small. In the case of Fire TV, it’s slightly bigger than a thumb drive, so you can bring it along with you anywhere. It also comes with a remote controller to easily navigate its interface once it’s plugged into the TV.

If you have an Amazon Prime account, you can access all the contents of Amazon Prime, including exclusives that are only available for premium users.

How Much Does it Cost?

The device itself only costs $69, and you only need to pay for it once, then you can use it as long as you want to.

Nevertheless, you do need to pay monthly for the streaming services you are using. For example, Amazon Prime is available for $6.99 each month. You can already access Amazon Prime Videos as well as stream music, and more. Of course, you also get a Prime membership for Amazon Australia.

For other services, Netflix Australia is available starting from $9.99. The same goes for Stan. Meanwhile, Foxtel Now starts at $25.

How to Set it Up

When you get your Amazon Fire TV stick, everything you’ll need will be included in the box, including the device itself, the remote control, an HDMI extender, USB cable, power adapter, and the guide. In most cases, the HDMI extender is not needed as you can plug the device into your TV, soundbar, or A/V receiver.

Nevertheless, keep the extender as it could be useful in various setups.

The device needs power, so you use the USB cable and power adapter to attach it to the outlet. Then simply turn your TV on as the device will automatically boot. Be sure to switch to the correct input as it will bring you the device’s interface.

Follow the instructions on the screen to pair the stick to the remote control. After that, you should be able to log into your Wi-Fi and then to your Prime account. If you bought the device via Amazon, it might have been automatically logged in to your account.

If the signal is terrible, you can connect your device directly to your router via a micro-USB-to-Ethernet adapter that you can buy separately.

There are a few more processes to the setup, but all are straightforward.

After the setup, you should arrive at the device’s interface, where it will show a few recommended apps you could install. To see more of these apps, click the Up button on your remote control, and then scroll to “Apps.”

Does it Support Voice Command?

Since it’s created by Amazon, the Fire TV supports voice commands via Alexa. This means you don’t have to click away on your remote control, especially if you’re not exactly tech-savvy, or you think the interface is a little confusing or overwhelming.

All you need to do is hold down the microphone button on the remote control and say your command. Release the button once you’re done, and it will do whatever you have commanded. Or you can link the device to an Amazon Echo.

With that, you can give voice commands with the remote control.

You can command it to open Netflix, play a specific title, pause, rewind or forward 10 seconds, download an app, and more.

What Can You Watch With Amazon Fire TV Stick?

You can basically watch any movies or TV shows on your Fire TV stick from a variety of apps you can download and subscribe to.

Of course, the Amazon Prime Video itself is a prominent streaming platform. It has some of the biggest TV shows and movies from Hollywood, plus a selection of Amazon Originals that are exclusively available via the service.

A few of the shows you can watch on it are Carnival Row, Battlestar Galactica, The Boys, The Magicians, Good Omens, American Gods, Doctor Who, and more.

Another big streaming service you can watch via Fire TV is Netflix. The Australian version is home to some great local content, but you can also watch Netflix Originals as well as Hollywood TV shows and movies, such as Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, 3%, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Kissing Game, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and more.

What is the Best Broadband Plan for Amazon Fire TV?

You need a consistent internet connection if you want to watch your shows on TV via Fire TV stick, which means you really should consider upgrading to an unlimited broadband plan that is now available on the NBN.

Streaming videos could consume data faster. An hour of streaming videos in Standard Definition resolution could already consume 1GB, so if your data’s capped, you’ll definitely go beyond your limit and pay more each month.

For speed, you can subscribe to 12Mbps plans as it should be enough to give you a great viewing experience if you’re the only person using the internet in the household. However, 25Mbps and 50Mbps plans can handle even 4K videos effortlessly.Still can’t decide which internet plan suits both your budget and needs?  Call Compare Broadband  at 1300 106 571 so we can help you directly and as quickly as possible.
