Video on demand has been around for a long time, and perhaps one of the first VOD services in Australia is Quickflix. Besides DVD rental, they also have the traditional online streaming service, making them a perfect choice for many Aussies.

In this guide, you will learn more about the following:

  • Is offline watching available?
  • How to watch from Quickflix
  • What’s on it?
  • What broadband plan is the best for Quickflix?

Without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about this video on demand service.

What is Quickflix?

Quickflix is a video on demand service that provides traditional DVD and Blu-ray rental as well as online streaming, much like popular services these days.

Based on its description on its official website, Quickflix has the biggest DVD library in the country, plus subscribers can also rent DVDs of the biggest movies or stream them months before they arrive on any traditional streaming service.

It was founded in 2003 as a rental service, becoming one of the most popular companies in the industry in Australia. By 2012, the company decided to venture into the world of online streaming, allowing its subscribers to watch movies from their devices.

Quickflix became one of the most popular and biggest video on demand services in Australia and New Zealand. However, new services entered the scene, and Quickflix’s ranking has slowly decreased.

As of writing, there aren’t very many choices left, and their library hasn’t been updated as well.

How Much Does it Cost?

Quickflix has two types of services: a Quickflix Red Carpet subscription that allows viewers to watch movies and TV shows and the pay-per-title Quickflix Access.

For the Quickflix Red Carpet subscription, the monthly fee is $20. You can already access their Blu-Ray and DVD rentals as well. Nevertheless, you can only take two titles out at a time. If you want to watch another title, you’ll have to return the current titles you have.

There are no late fees. You can return the disks as frequently as you want to get access to different titles.

Meanwhile, the pay-per-title Access tier is available for online streaming. You won’t have to pay each month for access like Netflix does. However, you do need to pay for the titles you want to watch.

The cost depends on the popularity of the movie and when it was launched. Newer films are available in Standard Definition and High Definition, which would cost you $5.99 and $6.99, respectively. Older movies are only available in SD resolution and are available to watch for $3.99.

Is Offline Watching Available?

Many of today’s streaming services offer offline watching, meaning subscribers can download the movies or episodes of their choice and watch it without internet connection later on.

Unfortunately, Quickflix does not offer this for their streaming service. You can only watch via online streaming when you have an internet connection, and the only way to watch without connection is by renting a DVD/Blu-ray disk.

How to Watch From Quickflix

Of course, you could watch the movies you have rented via a DVD player if that’s what you’ve opted for.

However, not many people still have disk players as people commonly use their devices to stream movies and TV shows. If this is what you choose, you can either watch directly on your web browser via the official Quickflix website or through a dedicated app.

Streaming on the website will only allow you to watch videos on SD resolution exclusively. Furthermore, you should either have Windows XP or Mac with an OS X 10.6 or later.

There is also a dedicated Quickflix app on the Windows Store, so it will work with Windows phones as well as Windows 10 and Windows 8 devices. A mobile app is also available for iOS devices with iOS 8.0 or later. However, you can only watch SD resolution videos on it. The Android Quickflix app is available for devices running on Android 4.0 or later and can stream SD or HD videos.

You can also watch from smart TVs, PS3 and PS4, as well as Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

What’s on Quickflix?

Quickflix is filled with Hollywood movies as well as Aussie content from TV shows and documentaries.

Among the shows you can watch are The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Wolves at the Door, Arrival, Passengers, Doctor Strange, Kong: Skull Island, Star Wars: Rogue One, Moana, Finding Dory, and more.

They also have a wide variety of old movies, such as Rebel Without a Cause, Strangers on a Train, It’s Alive, and more.

As mentioned above, the selection of movies and shows hasn’t been updated in a while. Manage your expectations as the choices are older than standard streaming services these days, such as Netflix and Stan.

What Broadband Plan is Best for Quickflix?

If you’re into renting DVDs, you don’t actually need an internet connection. That means you can retain whatever broadband plan you have now.

However, if you are also subscribed to their streaming service, you’ll want to upgrade to an unlimited plan.

Streaming videos can quickly consume data, especially if you’re watching HD videos for an hour or so. Typically, an hour of streaming HD videos would already use 3GB, which means you can consume your monthly data in a few hours or so.

Although you’re paying more when you upgrade to unlimited broadband plans, at least you can set aside the exact amount.

If you go beyond your consumable data for the month, you’ll pay for so much more than what you’d expect. Usually, this would throw you and your budget off guard. At least when you upgrade, you don’t have to worry whether you’re going overboard and stream as much as you want.

When it comes to speed, an NBN 12Mbps plan is enough as most of Quickflix’s videos are on SD. If you want a faster speed, you can upgrade to 25Mbps.
