Mulan is one of the most anticipated movies of 2020. This live-action remake of the 90s animated movie features Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, and Jet Li. The star-studded movie has a March 2020 release date. But because of unforeseen circumstances, its release date was moved to July, August, then September.

Though released finally, Mulan won't be available in theatres. You can only watch it through Disney+.

What to Expect in the Mulan Live-Action Movie

Disney is making a handful of remakes recently. People saw Aladdin in 2019 and it is quite similar to the animated movie from the 90s.

But for this live-action remake of Mulan, don't expect to see the same approach.

The film's creative team decides to go in the opposite direction. They are not retelling the story similar to the animated movie.

For those who haven't seen the animated movie, Mulan had a G rating. That means all of the violent scenes are off the camera. The only graphic moment in that movie is when one of the soldiers presents Captain Shang with the helmet of his father.

In the live-action Mulan, expect to see combat and violence. This movie is not suitable for very young audiences. In fact, this is the first Disney movie to receive a PG-13 rating.

This live-action Mulan will be completely different from the original movie.

Cost of Watching Mulan

The cost of watching Mulan through the streaming service Disney+ is quite expensive for some. Even if you're already an existing Disney+ subscriber, you still have to pay to see this movie.

Initially, reports said that the cost of watching Mulan would be around $30. This price may vary depending on the country. But in Australia, the cost of watching Mulan would be $34.99. That's twice the price of a cinema ticket.

How to Watch Mulan

To watch Mulan, you need to be a Disney+ subscriber.

So sign up for Disney+ with Premier Access if you're not yet a subscriber. Mulan is only available via Disney Plus Premier Access.

The Premier Access is a one-time fee of $34.99, on top of a regular plan. You can choose to either sign up with a monthly plan that costs $8.99 or a discounted annual package for $89.99.

After signing up and availing Premium Access, you can then stream Mulan on the Disney+ website. Also, you can use the Disney+ app to watch it on supported devices like the following:

  • Android phones and tablets
  • Apple iPhones and iPads
  • Amazon Fire Tablet

You can watch Mulan anywhere and as many times as you want as long as you're a Disney+ subscriber. That’s one of the benefits of having the movie available on a streaming platform. But if the cost of streaming is too much for you, you can wait for a few months. According to reports, Mulan will be available on Disney+ for free starting 04 December 2020.

Releasing the Movie on Disney+

Mulan is a big-budget movie. Its production cost over $200 million. Earning back that money is almost impossible if they released the movie on their streaming platform only.

However, the decision of releasing a big-budget movie on Disney+ might benefit them in the long run. The reason for that is because this allows them to experiment with a disruptive form of distribution.

But even if Disney earns money from Mulan, don't expect them to release more big-budget movies on their streaming service.

According to Disney CEO Bob Chapek, releasing Mulan on Disney+ is a "one-off" move. They did it because they have other movies lined up for 2021. They ought to release several Marvel and Star Wars movies as well.

Delaying the release of their 2020 movies will cause overlapping. This might affect the performance of the movies at the box office.

That’s why you shouldn’t  expect more cinema-centred titles in their video-on-demand streaming service in the future.

Is the Price Reasonable?

You can watch Mulan for $34.99. This is somehow overpriced. But like what I’ve said earlier,  that price allows you to watch the movie anytime and anywhere.

Also, the $34.99 price is already cheap if you're watching the movie with other people.

Sure, watching the movie at home isn't similar to the experience of watching it in the theatres. But remember that there are advantages to watching movies at home. For example, you have total control of your watching experience. You can pause the movie for bathroom breaks or you can set the volume based on your preferences.

Also, you can watch more movies at home. You wouldn't even have to worry about closing time! There are many streaming websites on the Internet and most of them are for free.
