When you’ve just gotten a phone line put on with Telstra, but want to change over to a TPG home phone line bundle, for example the 6-month TPG $9.99 ADSL2+ plan with $30 phone line rental, what do you need to do?
We are often asked if you’ll need to keep paying Telstra $30 for its home phone line rental, how do you cancel the Telstra service, and what happens once the initial 6-month contract period has finished? Also would the price with TPG increase after 6 months?
The TPG ADSL2+ home phone bundle with 10GB (5GB peak and 5GB off-peak) for $9.99 plus $30 for phone line rental on a 6-month contract is a great deal. This $39.99 total monthly price covers the cost of your landline rental, so you will no longer have to pay Telstra any money. TPG will become both your internet and home phone provider.
If you’ve just signed up with Telstra and leave them in the first 3 months of your telephone contract, you’ll have to pay a $100 cancellation fee, plus the $30 monthly phone line costs for any months you are with them.
For this reason some people choose to keep their phone line with Telstra and just get their ADSL2+ broadband through TPG. You can get a TPG stand-alone ADSL2+ plan with 15GB for $29.99 a month. However, this would mean paying an extra $20 a month for the combined services when compared to the 10GB TPG ADSL2+ home phone bundle. It also means you only have the option of 12-month or 18-month contract periods.
Another point you’ll need to contend with is whether or not the TPG ADSL2+ bundle is even available in your location, as it’s not an option in all areas of Australia. If available at your local telephone exchange, TPG will take care of the transfer of the phone and broadband. You won’t need to do anything except pay your final bills to Telstra.
After the 6-month contract is completed your plan will change into a month-to-month plan, and it will keep going until you choose to cancel the service. As you will no longer be under contract, no TPG cancellation fees will apply. The price will stay the same, but as you are not under contract future price changes can occur if that plan becomes obsolete.
Another option would be to go for the 18-month contract. The set-up fee is $79.95 instead of $129.95 on the 6-month plan, and your price would be set for a year and a half. However, these TPG ADSL2+ plan prices have not changed for a while, so you could be safe on the month-to-month contract for a long time.
