Types of NBN connections in Alice Springs

The NBN service is now available in parts of Alice Springs. The NBN stands for National Broadband Network, and it is a countrywide upgrade of Australia’s internet infrastructure. The NBN is Multi Technology Mix (also known as “MTM”), which means that there are different kinds of NBN connections made from different technologies. The reason for this is because of a change in Federal Government which happened earlier in the NBN’s rollout stage, which ultimately resulted in budget cuts to the NBN build. Consequently, not all NBN connections are created equal; some NBN connection types have been found to be less reliable than others, but regrettably, NBN customers do not get to choose what NBN connection type that have installed in their premises (this is colloquially known as the NBN Lottery). However, if you are saddled with a lackluster NBN connection type, you can often counter it by upgrading to a faster NBN speed tier, or by selecting an NBN deal that has unlimited NBN data.

NBN connections like Fixed Wireless and Sky Muster Satellite are commonly found in remote and regional areas where homes and businesses are spread out with many kilometers between them, whereas more suburban areas typically have NBN connection types like HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node). There is no hard and fast rule though, and you will need to enter your address into an NBN rollout map to determine what NBN connection the NBN Co has designated to your area. To use our NBN rollout map, simply scroll down below and enter your address. Make sure to enter your full and accurate address for best results. If the NBN build has not yet been completed on your street, the map will still be able to tell you if the NBN Co has designated an NBN connection type to your area. If your home already has the NBN, you can compare the best Alice Springs NBN plans and providers here.

Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
