Internode was founded in May 1991 by Simon Hackett, initially as a South Australian internet specialist. In 1997, Hackett founded Agile Communications, a builder of interstate fibre-optic networks. Internode existed through most of the 2000s as the largest independent, private (non-publicly traded) alternative to Telstra.
Internode has always focused on connecting remote (particularly rural South Australian) communities to a Telstra alternative, and on interacting closely with its subscriber base. With its all-Aussie workforce and strong focus on customer service, Internode has consistently enjoyed the absolute highest rates of customer satisfaction in Australia. The company has typically competed with premium providers like Telstra, Westnet and Optus, but most heatedly with iiNet. Internode and iiNet employed similar branding and a tech-friendly focus; for savvy consumers, the toss up was usually between these two companies.
By the end of 2012, Internode ran out of places to grow. After expanding its network to about 200 heavily populated exchange areas, expanding further would require double the number of subscribers, meaning Internode would either have to raise money by going public, or change its business model. Instead, Internode joined iiNet, in a $105 million buyout.
Internode now still operates independently of iiNet, but has expanded its network to the 420 exchanges that host iiNet DSLAMs. Outside its own network, Internode can provide Reach plans, connecting to the Telstra DSLAM network. Internode still seeks to be the technology connoisseur’s ISP of choice, keeping the network updated with the latest equipment, and offering high quality hardware options. This quality comes at a price however; Internode is typically one of the most expensive ISPs operating Australia-wide, but at least it’s easy to see where that money goes.
