Find answers to common questions here, and if you're still stuck?

Our team answers the phone, fast.

For a straight switch at an address that's already connected to nbn®, most transfers complete in three to five business days, and your new provider manages the handover with the network for you. If you're moving into a property with no active nbn® connection, or you need a technology upgrade (like FTTN to FTTP), it can take longer and usually requires a technician visit. Your new provider will confirm the expected timeframe once you sign up.

You're free to leave whenever you want. There's no fixed term, no minimum stay, and no exit fees, so if a better deal comes along or your needs change, you can switch or cancel any time without being stuck. The only thing to keep in mind: if your provider gave you a free modem, you may still owe the remaining cost of it if you leave early. Worth a quick check before you switch, but otherwise you're not locked into anything.

Typical evening speed is the average download speed a provider delivers between 7pm and 11pm on weeknights, when the most Australians are online at once. It's a more honest number than the maximum advertised speed, since that's rarely what you get during peak hours. The ACCC's Measuring Broadband Australia program tests and publishes this figure quarterly by provider and speed tier, so it's worth checking before you compare on price alone.

Only if you're still in a fixed-term contract. Most nbn® plans today are month-to-month, so there's nothing to break. The main thing to watch is a modem: if your provider gave you one for free and you leave within the contract period (often 24 months), you may have to pay out what's left on it. That cost has to be listed in the plan's Critical Information Summary, which every provider is legally required to give you, so it's worth checking that document before you switch.

No, in most cases there's no interruption. Your new provider coordinates the transfer with the network in the background, and any downtime is usually a few hours at most on the transfer date. You keep your existing service running until the new one is live.

No, your new provider handles the cancellation with your old one for you. The only reasons to contact your current provider directly are to negotiate a deal to stay, or to arrange returning any rented equipment (a modem, for example) so you're not charged for it later. Not always. If your current modem is compatible with your new provider's network (FTTP, FTTN, and HFC connections often need different modem types), you can usually bring it with you. Most providers on Compare Broadband offer a BYO modem option and will confirm compatibility at sign-up. If your modem isn't compatible, some providers include a new one in the plan cost, others charge a one-off or amortised fee. Confirm compatibility with your new provider before you cancel your existing service, so you're not left without a working modem on transfer day.

Comparing and switching through Compare Broadband is free, and you pay the same price as going directly to the provider. That said, there are three types of costs worth checking before you commit, though none apply to most switches: Modem costs. If your new provider posts you a modem, some charge a small delivery fee. If your old provider rented you a modem, they may charge a return fee if you don't send it back. New development charge. If your property has never been connected to the nbn® network before, NBN Co charges a one-off fee (currently around $300) that gets passed on by your provider. This doesn't apply if you're just switching providers at an already-connected address. Opticomm connection fee. If your address runs on the Opticomm private fibre network rather than nbn®, a connection fee applies each time you activate a service, regardless of which provider you choose.
