• Get a free modem when you stay connected
  • Are you looking to get a new modem?
  • Learn whether you even need a new modem

Finding the right Internet NBN plans with free modem available is easier than you think. There are options across a range of providers that offer customers a modem for free - but these often come with the caveat that you stay connected with that provider for a minimum length of time.

Choosing the right Internet provider should be a choice that goes beyond whether you can get Internet plans with free modem. If you are in need of a new modem or an upgrade, then it’s a great option but you should still look for speed, perks and great features you’re interested in.

Below, we’ve put together a list of the providers that offer a free modem with the NBN plan of your choice.

Superloop

Superloop offers a range of modem and router options tailored to your needs. For those on residential NBN or other fibre broadband plans with speeds of 100 Mbps and above (or lower speeds after 7 months continuous connection), Superloop provides an Amazon eero 6+ mesh Wi‑Fi router at zero upfront cost, plus a $20 shipping fee.

The Amazon eero 6+ acts as a mesh Wi‑Fi router (rather than a traditional modem), leveraging your Internet connection for robust home coverage. It supports connectivity for over 75 devices, helps reduce network congestion, and ensures smooth performance for streaming, video calls, gaming, and more.

When paired with Superloop’s high‑speed Internet plans - especially the NBN 1000 tier - the combination delivers powerful bandwidth and seamless home connectivity

Tangerine

Tangerine Telecom supports a flexible approach to getting you online, whether you prefer to Bring Your Own (BYO) device or opt for one of their pre-configured options.

  • BYO Modem/router: Tangerine Telecom encourages customers to bring their own NBN-compatible modem or router - with support for various connection types. For FTTN/FTTB setups, a VDSL modem is required, whereas for FTTP, HFC, FTTC, and Fixed Wireless, a WAN-enabled router is needed. Customers should be comfortable setting up their own device, as Tangerine Telecom may not support all makes and models.
  • Modem/router purchases: If BYO isn’t your preference, Tangerine Telecom offers the eero 6+, too.

Optus

Optus Ultra WiFi Modem

Optus offers a range of modem and router options across its NBN, 4G, and 5G home Internet plans. Most NBN plans include the Optus Ultra Wi‑Fi Modem (Gen 2), which features Wi‑Fi 6 technology and built-in 4G backup to keep you online during outages.

While there’s no upfront cost, the modem is tied to a 24-month repayment term - if you cancel early, the remaining balance (around $12.75/month) must be paid out. The Gen 2 modem also comes pre-configured and supports both DSL and Ethernet-based NBN connections, making setup simple.

For 5G Home Internet plans, Optus provides the Ultra Wi‑Fi 5G Modem, which supports the latest wireless standards, high-speed performance, and plug-and-play convenience. The 4G Home Internet offering also includes a modem if you commit to a 24-month term, or you can buy it outright.

Optus also supports bring-your-own (BYO) modems, provided they're compatible with your connection type, though technical support for setup is limited in those cases.
