Fastest nbn® speed tiers in Melbourne

nbn® 1000 is the fastest plan on the market, followed by nbn® 500, then nbn® 250. All three require FTTP or HFC; none of them are available on FTTN or FTTC. Melbourne has a mix of established FTTN suburbs and newer FTTP developments. This means eligibility for these top tiers varies more block by block here than in newer-build cities.

Who actually needs nbn® 500 or nbn® 1000 in Melbourne?

Most Melbourne households don't need the top two tiers, but a few use cases genuinely benefit:

Large households with five or more people regularly streaming, gaming or on video calls at the same time

• Households running a business or side hustle that involves uploading large files, such as video editing or content creation
• Multiple simultaneous 4K or competitive online gaming setups where any slowdown is noticeable
• Households that have merged, such as a share house or multi-generational home. This is where several separate internet-heavy routines now run under one connection

Inner-city apartment dwellers in FTTP buildings are increasingly able to access these tiers now. A decade ago, only houses with newer estate-wide fibre could. This is changing who these top tiers actually suit in Melbourne.

If none of the above sounds like your household, nbn® 100 or nbn® 250 is more likely to be the better fit. Paying for speeds you won't use doesn't make your everyday browsing or streaming any faster.

What connection type do I need for the fastest speeds?

Apartment buildings add another layer of complexity. FTTB buildings share the connection type label with FTTN in terms of typical top speed. It also generally caps at around nbn® 100 depending on internal wiring. FTTP buildings can reach the same top tiers as a standalone house on FTTP.

Realistically, not everyone in a residential spot needs the top tier speeds. There is a difference between what's needed, what's in your budget and what you'll actually use. If it's just you living alone and sending a few emails, do you really need to pay for the fastest speeds on the market? Nope!

Becoming eligible for faster nbn® speeds in Melbourne

If you're on FTTN or FTTC, nbn®'s Forced Fibre Upgrade Program may move you to full fibre from July 2027. This opens up access to nbn® 250, nbn® 500 and nbn® 1000. To qualify for the upgrade, you don't need to change to a higher speed plan. After the change, you can choose to upgrade and access the higher speeds, however.

Real-world speed rarely matches the maximum advertised figure. nbn® fixed-line connections deliver an average of 98.5% of plan speeds across Australia.  This is measured during the busy 7pm to 11pm period (ACCC).

The gap between advertised and actual speed is smaller than many people assume. This figure applies across all tiers. A Melbourne household on nbn® 500 can expect speeds close to the advertised typical evening speed.  There shouldn't be a big drop-off at peak times.

Comparing providers for the fastest plans

Every provider runs on the same physical nbn® network. This means that the speeds themselves don't vary by provider at the same tier and address. What does vary is how consistently a provider delivers close to that advertised speed during peak evening hours. This comes down to how they manage their own network capacity.
