Dodo

Dodo offers a range of NBN plans including the mid-tier NBN 50 plan, which is a balance between speed and affordability. With prices starting at $65 per month, it offers unlimited internet with speeds of up to 50 Mbps. It comes with no lock-in contracts and an option to bring your own modem. You can also add a home phone with PAYG calls. In addition, Dodo offers a $10 monthly discount when you bundle your internet with their electricity or gas service.

The NBN provider self-reports a maxed-out 50 Mbps typical evening speed for its NBN 50 plan. But in August 2022, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that Dodo delivered 96.2% of average maximum speeds during peak hours, which was among the lowest of the tracked providers.

Exetel

Exetel offers some of the fastest internet plans in Melbourne with actual speeds that are close to its advertised speeds most of the time. It offers a range of NBN plans in different speed tiers with no data caps, no lock-in contracts, and the option to BYO modem and add a home phone service.

The NBN provider runs regular promotions such as its $126 discount over the first six months for its NBN 50 plan. All plans also include a 2-month free Home Secure trial and 5 speed boost days per month.

Optus

Optus is known to be on the more premium end of NBN plans. Its NBN 50 is available from $75 per month and includes unlimited data, an optional phone line, and a modem priced at $252 upfront on a no lock-in contract or $0 if you stay connected for 36 months. 

While expensive, however, paying a little more for an Optus plan will give you access to perks and other features exclusive to its customers. These include a discounted subscription to services like Optus Sport. For an extra $10 per month, you can also upgrade to its Family Entertainer plans which add a WiFi booster and a WiFi Secure to your plan.

Superloop

Superloop is a second-tier NBN provider with an average 97.9% of max download speed as per the latest ACCC report — indicating that it is equally capable of supplying fast and reliable internet service as any other big-name telcos. What’s more, it is highly rated for consistently having the lowest latency among other NBN providers in Australia with an average of 8.5 milliseconds (ms).

It offers NBN 50 plans from $58.95 per month with unlimited data and no lock-in contracts. Similar to Exetel, it also throws in 5 free speed boost days monthly.

NBN 100 fast Internet plans

NBN 100 is a great option for larger households or small businesses that require faster internet speeds. It is the most widely available plan with ultra-fast speeds that allow multiple users to stream in 4k, download large files quickly, and run smart devices.

The fastest NBN providers offer the option between upload speeds of 20 Mbps and 40 Mbps for the same speed tier.

Dodo

If you’re looking for faster speeds, Dodo offers a reliable NBN 100 unlimited plan with a self-reported 92 Mbps of typical evening download speeds. At $85 per month, it is priced competitively compared to other plans in the same speed tier. 

However, what makes Dodo’s NBN plans more attractive is that it’s one of the few providers that offer a 12-month introductory discount that slashes $10 per month off your monthly bill. Customers also have the option to pay just $10 for the first month and the regular $85 per month thereafter. Either way, these offers push Dodo further to the cheaper end of NBN 100 plans.

Exetel

Exetel offers one of the fastest NBN 100 plans in Melbourne with maxed out typical evening speed of 100 Mbps. It costs an introductory price of $62.90 per month or a total of $132 savings for the first six months. While the price increases to $84.95 after the discount period, it is still $7 less than the average cost in this speed tier. 

Additionally, Exetel provides 5 free speed boost days per month which temporarily bumps up the internet speed to up to 250 Mbps. 

More Telecom

Although More Telecom does not offer as many features as other NBN providers, it does offer mid-range pricing for its NBN plans with typical evening speeds close to its advertised download speeds. It also provides a 14-day free NBN trial and a 30% discount for CommBank customers across all speed tiers for the first 12 months. 

More Telecom gives you the option to BYO modem or choose from their range of modems that range from $179 to $429.90.

Optus

Optus offers maxed-out typical evening speeds on its NBN 100 plan. It costs $89 for the first six months and $99 thereafter. It is inclusive of a WiFi modem, which is free if you stay connected for 36 months, and a discounted rate on Optus Sport for $6.99 per month. 

Similar to its NBN 50, you also have the option to upgrade to the Family Entertainer plan for an additional $20 per month. This adds a Netflix standard subscription and a WiFi booster to your plan.

Superloop

Unlike other providers with comprehensive NBN offerings, Superloop keeps its plans to the bare essentials: fast speeds and competitive promo pricing. It is one of the rare providers that offer both NBN 100/20 and NBN 100/40 plans that cost a discounted rate of $69.95 and $79.95 per month, respectively.

Superloop’s NBN plans are some of the fastest and most affordable in the market today. All plans come on a no lock-in contract and the option to BYO modem or add one from $145 upfront.

NBN 250 fast Internet plans

NBN 250 is a super-fast broadband plan that is recommended for households and businesses with high-speed internet requirements. With a maximum plan speed of up to 250 Mbps, it is now almost as widely available as NBN 100 plans and is fast becoming a go-to option for lightning-quick broadband. It means users can expect fast and reliable internet speeds for streaming, gaming, and downloading even during busy hours.

Uniti 

The NBN 250 is Uniti’s fastest NBN plan available and costs $119.95 per month. It offers a maximum plan speed of up to 250 Mbps and includes an optional modem for $149.95 outright. Meanwhile, setup fees cost $99 on a no-contract plan, $49 for a 12-month plan, and $0 for a 24-month plan, thus giving you options on whether you prefer flexibility or cost savings.

NBN 1000 fast Internet plans

The once scarce NBN 1000 speed tier is growing in availability in Australia. Also called Ultrafast plans, it’s the fastest NBN plans available by far. However, they are only available in select locations with FTTP or select HFC connection types.

Telcos report an average typical evening speed of 454 Mbps in this speed tier, but the maximum plan speed can reach 200-700 Mbps with an upload speed of up to 50 Mbps. NBN 1000 plans are ideal for anyone needing ultra-fast speeds for downloading large data files, streaming 4k content, online gaming, video conferencing, or other data-intensive activities.

NBN 1000 plans cost an average of $149 per month, depending on the provider. But it’s standard for many telcos to offer introductory discounts, with prices starting for as low as $119 per month for the first six months.

How do I get private fibre fast Internet plans?

While NBN is the most widely used and widely available network in Australia, it’s not your only option for a fast internet connection. Private fibre networks like Opticomm may be a great alternative in some cases.

Unlike the government-owned NBN, private fibre networks are fully independent and privately owned telecom companies. They offer a bespoke fibre network with usually less congestion and higher speeds than the NBN. But whereas the NBN is far-reaching, private fibre network connections are quite limited, primarily catering to new apartment buildings and newly developed housing estates.

OptiComm

As a private wholesale operator, OptiComm runs its own fixed-line network and sells its services to providers who then offer them to customers. It mainly uses FTTP technology, delivering a download speed of up to 100 Mbps.

Why is my NBN slow and how do I fix it?

Even with the ultra-fast speeds the above plans offer, keep in mind that you may still experience slow speeds, particularly during busy hours. High traffic times can cause network congestion and slower speeds. Essentially, despite its high-speed capabilities, there are many other reasons why your NBN can be slow. Running an internet speed test is a great way to find the root. 

• Type of NBN Connection

Mainly among them is the type of connection you have. There are at least six types of NBN connections across Australia, with FTTP offering the highest speeds and Fibre to the Node (FTTN), the slowest. It’s because FTTN connections use the same copper wiring as landlines and are susceptible to interference that may result in slower speeds.

• Internet Throttling During Peak Hours 

As said earlier, the internet sees the most traffic from 7-11 pm — the peak hours when you are most likely to experience network congestion. During these cases, some ISPs may throttle your internet by slowing down your connection to prevent overloads.

• Faulty NBN Network Termination Device (NTD)

Also known as an NBN box or NBN modem, the NTD is the modem device that is used to connect your home to the NBN. When it’s faulty, it can result in issues with your internet such as slow speeds, dropouts, or no connection at all. In these cases, contact your provider to arrange a schedule with an NBN technician.

• Location of your modem or router

Your setup at home can also affect your NBN speed — whether there are obstructions between the router and your devices such as walls and furniture. If you have a large home, consider adding a WiFi extender to expand your WiFi coverage.

• Inadequate bandwidth

Your online activities and how heavy your data usage is can also affect your internet speed. Downloading large files such as video or software may take longer to download or upload, particularly if you are on lower speeds such as 25-50 Mbps. Slower speeds can result in lag, buffering, and interrupted gameplay. So, make sure to assess your daily internet activities to know how much data and speed you require in your NBN plan. 

• Outdated Firmware

Check that your firmware is up to date. An incompatible or outdated router can also affect your speed.

• Distance between your home and the node

Needless to say, the farther your premise is from the node, the slower your speeds will be.

Can I get the NBN FTTP upgrade in Melbourne?

The National Broadband Network, the wholesale NBN provider, has previously announced that an additional one million premises on the FTTN technology will become eligible to upgrade to FTTP connections. The upgrade announcement follows the government’s commitment of $2.4 billion to fund the full fibre rollout, which is slated to complete by the end of 2025. 

Households and businesses eligible for the full fibre upgrade will be able to access the fastest NBN plans including the NBN 250 and the ultrafast NBN 1000, both of which are only available on FTTP and HFC connections.
