Optus Internet Plans

Optus is the second-largest telecommunications company in Australia. As well as ADSL, NBN and home wireless broadband, they offer mobile phones, tablets and home phones, as well as sport and entertainment streaming apps. Fun fact: the word “Optus” is Latin for “to choose”.

Optus offers Aussies a few options for an internet plan, which include:

Most of Optus’ internet plans (including 5G Home Internet) come with unlimited data. However, 4G mobile broadband and home wireless plans have limited data caps.

Optus' NBN plans are perhaps the most notable of its offering, with a variety of different bundled internet packages that include home phone or entertainment. To determine if your home may connect to the NBN network, you can check using our search engine tool or simply call us at Compare Broadband.

For NBN, you simply select your desired speed, either NBN 50 (Standard Plus) or NBN 100/20 (Premium), for an extra $20 each month. Eligible customers may purchase super-fast NBN 250 or NBN 1000 speed upgrades to their plan.

All plans are available on no-contract terms. They also include a $252 WiFi modem (or $504 ASUS modem in the case of Gamer plans). However, if you remain with Optus for a full 36 months, the modem price will be waived.

Optus offers month-to-month and 24-month contracts across all their broadband types, as well as a choice of any of the four NBN speed tiers. If you find that your house doesn’t have the infrastructure for ADSL, cable or NBN, they also offer Home Wireless Broadband, which simply plugs into your power socket and connects wirelessly to Optus’s 4G network. All of Optus’s wired broadband plans come with unlimited data, so you don’t need to worry about choosing a data cap or going over your limit.

At Compare Broadband, we have compared a range of plans from different providers so that you can find the best deal possible. If your area is not connected yet to the NBN, Optus also offers Home Wireless Broadband, which plugs into your power socket and connects wirelessly to Optus’s 4G network. All of Optus’s wired broadband plans come with unlimited data, so you don’t need to worry about choosing a data cap or going over your limit.

Optus keeps it simple when it comes to their NBN plans. You can either choose a fixed-line speed of 50Mbps or 100Mbps. You may notice that some of the entry-level prices are much higher than other NBN providers. If you want a faster speed and can afford to pay a bit more, you can go for the Optus Internet Everyday NBN100 Plan. This is the speed you need for 4K video streaming, large file downloads, and even live gaming with almost no lag. The starting price for this plan is $89 per month on a month-to-month contract with no startup fee as well.

If you want a Netflix subscription included in your NBN plan, you'll save more by getting the Internet Family Entertainer plan, which is available in 50Mbps and 100Mbps speed tiers. FAQs

Why choose Optus for NBN?

Optus NBN with its range of technologies is able to connect your home to Australia’s latest high-capacity broadband network, which provides you with a better online experience.

Optus is a premium internet provider like Telstra.  It is known to offer plans that are quite pricier than the rest but has a lot of perks and bonuses, such as football streaming and TV set-top box bundle.  Optra offers well-performing services along with lots of add-ons and extras that increase your plan’s value, especially if you like entertainment.

How fast are Optus NBN plans?

Internet service provider (ISP) Optus was rated number 1 in NBN average download speed by ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia. Optus also offers more speed options and has reliable internet connections so you won’t have to worry about lags and drop-outs. Optus promises great performance, especially at typical evening speeds.

What is Optus Sport and OS Fitness?

Optus Sport is an Australian group of channels launched by Optus to outbid Foxtel for the English Premier League television rights. It combines live and on-demand streams of the latest EPL matches with 24/7 programming that features news, interviews and exclusive highlights from football experts. Compared to Foxtel, you only pay a fraction of the cost to enjoy great sports coverage, plus if you are subscribed to the Optus Sport app, you can enjoy a full Premier League experience anytime, anywhere. It has different channels:

  • Optus Sport 1 – Shows Premier League that shows UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and internationals. It broadcasts the IMG world feed. It also shows Scores on Sunday.

  • Optus Sport 2 – This is the first overflow channel and shows selected international shows as well. It is used as a secondary dedicated channel in some sports events, like the 2018 FIFA World Cup, showing simultaneous live matches, replays, and play highlights.

  • Optus Sport 3-6 – These channels are still overflow channels and they broadcast simultaneous live events of the Premier League and other competitions.

OS Fitness was launched by Optus Sports as its fitness platform, bringing home workouts from leading fitness providers which aims to create and deliver fun and effective video workouts. This provides greater value to customers and broadens the Optus Sport Community, creating new connections and encouraging new subscriptions even to those who are not exactly football or sports enthusiasts. And since you can use Optus Sports on any device, you may bring it with you and stream it anytime anywhere you feel like doing your workout.

Do I need to buy a new modem to sign up for Optus?

Since the NBN roll-out was completed only last year, some homes have not yet upgraded their broadband connections to NBN. If you’re one of those who were able to upgrade to a new Optus modem, then you won’t have to buy a new one.

But if you are uncertain, it would be best to call and have them double-check for you.  If you have not upgraded yet, Optra usually offers this at no extra cost. You may, of course, purchase your own modem, but if you wish to avail of Optra’s services it would be best to seek their assistance in picking out the right one to ensure compatibility.
