According to Radian Arc, a West Australian cloud infrastructure provider that targets gaming services, it has already signed deals with various telcos and is currently deploying 36 POPs across the world. The cloud infrastructure provider which is based in Perth is listed on the ASX. It is helmed by David Cook, who has an extensive background in OTT video.

According to Cook, who was also previously the COO of CinemaNow: “We really felt like the next segment of the industry to do that kind of digital transition would be gaming.”

Cook also worked on Ericsson projects, particularly in Asia, putting edge computing inside of telcos’ networks. “As a result of that, we built some very good relationships in the cloud gaming industry,” he said.

Cook also stated: “About 18 months ago, I sat down with the CEO of Blacknut and said, ‘What are some of the biggest problems that you’re trying to solve in order to really see cloud gaming be successful? To grow from the idea that everyone has to what it could actually be.”

One of the key elements when it comes to gaming is user experience. This includes factors like game startup speed, latency, and jitter to name a few although these factors vary dramatically by country. Another element is content. He believes that premium content has tended to follow on the heels of a good user experience.

“The third piece is the economics,” Cook further added. “And the economics of cloud gaming are actually a little bit challenging. Because it’s not just a stream, like an OTT stream, it’s actually an amount of capex and opex associated with the number of subscribers that can be supported.”

“Up until very recently, a single GPU in the cloud could support one game at a time,” Cook also said.

However, Radian Arc is working with another key partner, graphics card maker AMD, to deliver a 12:1 ratio. “That quite dramatically changes the economics,” Cook said of this.

According to the CEO, out of those three challenges, Radian Arc focused on user experience and the economics of cloud gaming. Cook further added: “We’re focused on making sure we can create the best user experience for consumers by putting a GPU edge inside the operator’s network. And we focus on the economics by making sure we have the most efficient solution by putting the GPU inside the operator’s network.”

But he noted that Radian Arc is not limiting itself to gaming but it has also branched out with a cloud desktop service a telco can sell to its enterprise customers. “Ultimately, you could put the smart of smart city or the smart of the smart home inside that PoP, and then have those devices connect over 5G,” the CEO concluded.
