OpenSignal: Australia and NZ Make it to the Top 10 for 5G Download Speeds

OpenSignal released a new global 5G experience benchmark report. Australia scraped into the top 10 nations for download speeds in this report. The report also revealed that the average performance of the country is 231Mbps. New Zealand fared better, ranking ninth with an average performance of 240.7Mbps.

However, it should be noted that the countries making it to the top ten of OpenSignal leaderboards were significantly smaller geographically. The nations dominating the list and making it to the top three include South Korea with an average download speed of 423.8Mbps, Norway with an average download speed of 355.3Mbps, and Taiwan with an average download speed of 320Mbps.

In OpenSignal’s last global analysis, Australia was seen to have an average download speed of 238.3Mbps. Hence, the report revealed a slight drop in the country’s download average. The last global analysis of OpenSignal was released in September this year.

Among the nations included in the top ten, Australia and Kuwait were the only nations that saw a slight drop in their download speed average. The data behind this was based on November.

Apart from the average download speed, it can be noted in the report that even the peak 5G download speed in the country also declined slightly from 606.1Mbps to 598.7Mbps.

In the new analysis released by OpenSignal, which is its cut-off in its quarterly updates, NZ no longer made it to the top 15. In addition to this, neither Australia nor NZ made it to the top 15 for the “experience” metrics of OpenSignal, covering video, games, and voice app performance.

Nevertheless, Australia ranked #14 for 5G reach, having a 3.8 out of 10.

According to OpenSignal’s observations, most global markets continue to be in the 5G rollout phase even if access to wireless technology is becoming more and more common.

OpenSignal’s report noted: “On 5G Reach, in all of the top fifteen global markets, users saw a 5G signal in over one-third of the locations they visited.”

“What is most impressive about these results is that in a number of extremely large markets Opensignal users are seeing a wide extent of 5G services. The US ranks 6th for 5G availability and 4th for 5G reach. Canada, the second-largest country in the world by land area, ranks 13th in 5G reach. Similarly, one of the geographically largest markets in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, places highly in both 5G availability (3rd) and 5G reach (8th) while the vast Australia ranks 14th for 5G reach globally.”
