More than anyone, students need a solid and steady internet connection. Australia's students are the future of our workforce, and without a good connection that future faces roadblocks.

There are over 1.6 million domestic and international students study at Australian universities. Most of these students will set up their own internet at least once during their course. Whether that's a first share house, a studio near campus or a room in halls, they need great connectivity.

The tough part is choosing a plan and the provider to go with it. Students are already on a budget. Finding the best internet for students often means using student discounts when possible. Cheap internet for students may not mean a nbn® discount, but there are some great options.

Compare Broadband makes that decision simple. If you study at RMIT University or Monash University, signing up through this page also gets you $25 cashback!

What is the best nbn® plan for students in Australia?

The best nbn® plan for a student depends on how many people share the connection and where they live. Someone studying alone can run video calls and lectures comfortably on nbn® 50. A share house of three or more benefits from nbn® 100 or the new nbn® 500 tier on full fibre. Compare Broadband gives $25 cashback to students at RMIT University and Monash University.

Student nbn® plans with $25 cashback

Compare Broadband pays $25 cashback to students who sign up to an eligible nbn® plan through this page and stay connected for 90 days. The offer currently applies to students at RMIT University and Monash University, with more institutions added over time. If you're looking for free nbn® for students, you may not get it, but you will find student discount internet options.

How to qualify for $25 cashback:

  • Sign up through Compare Broadband, hold the plan for 90 days, then provide proof of enrolment when asked.
  • Cashback is paid to a nominated bank account once the 90-day period is confirmed.
  • Not every plan or provider on this page is included in the offer. Call our team on 1300 764 000 or check the full terms at the bottom of this page before signing up.

What to look for in a student nbn® plan

While free internet for students may not be on the table except for public Wi-Fi, there are still good broadband plan options.

Students have to weigh up more than just internet speeds when choosing a plan that suits their study load. There are costs to consider. It's smart to check if a modem is included or optional, too, but also consider the provider’s reliability.

Most providers now offer very similar plan structures, whether you're choosing Aussie Broadband or Superloop. The key is to check what plans include and go from there.

Factor What it means for students
Cost Set-up costs and ongoing monthly pricing vary by provider. Compare the cheapest nbn® plans before locking anything in.
Speed A share house of 3+ needs more headroom than someone living alone. Match the speed tier to how many are online at once.
Reliability Google Reviews, TrustPilot and Product Review can assist with which provider is most reliable.

As a rough guide, household size lines up with speed tier like this:

Household Typical use Suggested speed tier
Studying solo Video calls, streaming, lectures nbn® 50
Share house of 2-3 Multiple video calls, gaming, streaming nbn® 100
Share house of 4+ Heavy simultaneous use across the household nbn® 500 (HFC/FTTP)

Cheap nbn® plans for students

The cheapest nbn® plans suit students who mainly browse, stream, and attend online classes. They are less suited to large downloads or competitive gaming.

The trade-off is speed. A lighter plan is fine for one person studying, but a busy share house will notice the difference during peak evening hours.

nbn® connection types for share houses and student housing

Most student housing runs on standard nbn® fibre to the node or fibre to the curb. New-build apartments and townhouses near universities are increasingly connected directly with fibre to the premises.

On full fibre or HFC connections, nbn® 500 is now the standard entry tier following nbn Co's 2025 network upgrade. This means that most share houses on those connections are reliable for several students studying and streaming at once.

From July 2027, nbn Co will require full fibre upgrades for selected fibre to the node and fibre to the curb addresses. Providers will start contacting eligible homes from 1st July 2027, with copper switched off from January 2028. If your rental or share house address is on the list, check eligibility now. It is better than scrambling once a shutdown date is set (NBN Co, 2026).

Switching or moving into student housing?

Moving into a share house or student accommodation usually means starting a new nbn® connection. When you switch nbn® providers through Compare Broadband, you pay nothing extra.

Give the team the new address and moving date, and they will handle the connection request and any provider switch at the same time. Living alone instead? Best Wi-Fi for one person covers what a single-occupant setup actually needs.

Renting for the first time? Our guide to the best internet plan for renters covers what to check before you sign up. It includes setup fees and how easy it is to move your service later.

FAQs

Are there nbn® plans made just for students?

No provider currently sells a nbn® plan built only for students. What changes is price, speed and any sign-up perks, which is why comparing before committing is worth the ten minutes it takes.

What nbn® speeds do students actually need?

Someone studying and streaming alone is usually fine on nbn® 50. A share house of three or more is better off on nbn® 100 or, on a full fibre address, the newer nbn® 500 tier.

Can international students get the $25 cashback?

Yes. The cashback is open to any student enrolled at a participating university, currently RMIT University and Monash University. All you have to do is sign up through Compare Broadband and meet the 90-day qualifying period.

What if my share house address is due for a mandatory fibre upgrade?

Providers will contact eligible Fibre to the Node and Fibre to the Curb addresses from 1st July 2027.

This is under nbn Co's Targeted Upgrade Program. Check eligibility now so the switch to full fibre does not clash with exams or moving out.

How early should I set up nbn® before semester starts?

Book the connection at least two to three weeks before move-in where possible. Standard nbn® connections are usually quick. But a new development or a first-time connection can take longer. Orientation week is the worst time to be without internet.

Are you eligible for a FREE fibre upgrade?

The government is making 1.5 million Australian homes and businesses eligible for a speed upgrade to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), which offers greater speed and reliability. Selected towns and suburbs with FTTC and FTTN are eligible for the upgrade with an eligible high speed nbn plan.
