One of the biggest disappointments for customers is when a broadband plan looks like a bargain on first glance but once you factor in the cost for set-up and buying a modem, it really isn’t as cost-effective as the company would like you to believe.
There are, however, many economical plans with cheap setup fees which also come along with a free (or discounted) modem and we will highlight some of them for you today. However, something you should be aware of is that to balance this out, most of these plans have longer contracts. If you know you’ll be staying put for a while though, and you’re happy to stay with the same provider, signing up for a longer contract will save you a sizeable amount on upfront costs.
TPG NBN Tier 1 Unlimited
For some of the higher tier subscriptions at TPG such as an unlimited NBN plan for an 18 month contract, there are no set up costs as well as a free modem. However, there is a $10 delivery fee to get the modem to you. Depending on the type of person you are, that could be a total non-issue or something you find ludicrous.
Either way, I promise that for the rest of the list, zero fees will mean no money has to leave your wallet!
Optus 60 Plan nbn
Optus 60 Plan nbn offers $0 setup and a free Wi-Fi modem with your package when you sign on for 24 months. This makes setting up an Optus plan free, apart from the first month’s upfront payment and of course, Optus delivers their modems for free.
This comes at a monthly cost of $60, for unlimited data with an included home phone line with pay as you go rates.
On the other hand, you can have the exact same plan for month to month payment where you also get the modem for free, except you’ll have to pay a $200 starting fee. The best fit in this instance will depend on the flexibility you need. Call Optus on 1300 137 897 to find out more.
Foxtel Broadband ADSL2+ Unlimited
Similarly, Foxtel’s 24 month contract unlimited ADSL2+ plan comes to $101 per month with no set up or modem fees. There are however, fees for TV installation and to have Foxtel iQ3 which enables you to enjoy, on top of your internet connection, 43 channels on TV, the ability to watch, pause and rewind live TV as well as stream the latest movies and shows on demand!
Ultimately, set up fees and modem costs are just another aspect you need to consider when making a broadband purchase. The most important thing is to have a clear grasp on the relative importance of affordability and flexibility to you and make sure there are no hidden costs or nasty surprises when you make a purchase!
