NBN Co has announced plans to introduce new, higher-speed Internet tiers following feedback from Internet retailers.
Initially, NBN Co had been discussing upgrades to its current top three speed tiers, increasing them to 500Mbps, 750Mbps, and up to 1Gbps.
However, feedback has led to the proposal of a new "hyperfast" tier offering speeds beyond 1Gbps.
An ultrafast upload boost
Originally set for the second half of the year, discussions about these multi-gigabit speeds have been moved up. The new "hyperfast" plans include:
Plan type | Download speed | Upload speed |
Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) | 2000Mbps | 200Mbps |
Hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) | 2000Mbps | 100Mbps |
Business fibre | 2000Mbps | 500Mbps |
To support these speeds, new in-home equipment, called a network termination device (NTD), may be needed. Residential users would get a slimline, single-port NTD capable of handling future speeds up to 2.5Gbps, while businesses would receive a four-port model capable of speeds up to 10Gbps.
Anna Perrin, NBN Co's Chief Customer Officer, stated, "We are happy to explore how and when the NBN network could deliver wholesale download speeds of 2Gbps to eligible residential and business customers. Our consultation with retailers is providing them with a line-of-sight to a multi-gigabit future, enabling them to prepare their products and customer services to meet the growing need for speed amongst residential, business, and enterprise customers."
The proposed changes would boost NBN 100 plans to a maximum speed of 500Mbps and NBN 250 plans to 750Mbps. NBN 1000 plans would keep their current download speed, but their upload speed would double to 100Mbps.
NBN Co hasn't announced the pricing or availability yet, but they are asking providers if these plans should be launched with the speed increases for NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000 plans. If all goes ahead, we may end up seeing NBN 2000 plans emerge at the same time.
