The NBN stands for National Broadband Network. It is a countrywide internet infrastructure upgrade designed and implemented by the Federal Government. Built and maintained by a government body known as the NBN Co, it involves taking Australia’s old copper wire internet infrastructure and replacing it with a generally quicker and more reliable fibre optic cable network. The NBN service is now largely available in Albany. If the NBN build is still ongoing in your area, the rollout map will still tell you an estimate of when you can expect your NBN upgrade to be fully completed. The map will also tell you what manner of NBN connection type has been assigned to your home. The NBN is a Multi Technology Mix (or “MTM”) which means that there are different NBN connection types made up of different technologies. Some NBN connections have been found to be less reliable than others, but you do not get to choose what kind you are given (this is now referred to as the NBN Lottery), but if your are finding your NBN connection lacklustre, you can generally counter that by selecting an NBN plan that has a higher NBN speed tier and/or a sizable amount of data per month. Fibre to the node
Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Fixed wireless connection
In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
