• 2 in 3 Australians haven't upgraded their Internet plan for at least 3 years
  • Regional data use is up 6% since October 2023
  • Review your Internet plan in 2024

As we move further into the New Year, it's a good idea to check if your current Internet plan still suits your needs.

According to the NBN Co, the amount of data we’ve been using in the past seven years has increased triple-fold, but two in three Australians haven’t changed their Internet plan speeds in the last three years - are you one of them?

In 2023, the typical Australian NBN user downloaded around 423GB monthly, which is a rise in downloads of over 50% compared to three years ago. To put that in perspective, this amount of data is akin to downloading the first episode of The Simpsons from a streaming service a whopping 2,708 times.

Regional data usage continues to grow and is up 6% compared to October 2023 and over 830,000 homes/businesses downloaded more than 1TB in October 2023, up 14% on last year.

These stats should show you that now is the time to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal. Take a look at your usage, talk to your Internet provider, or shop around for a new plan.

It's important to review your plan at least once a year to make sure it still meets your needs today, not just in the past.

Get to know your speeds

Dr. Robert Joyce, Head of Customer Strategy and Innovation at NBN, suggests that the New Year is a great time to check if your Internet plan still works well for you and your family.

Many NBN customers don't know their exact Internet speed or that the NBN offers different speed plans. If your goals for 2024 include being more productive, learning new skills, starting an online business, or making your home more tech-friendly, you'll need a high-speed Internet connection, and NBN can help with that.

Here are three tips to help you find the right plan:

  1. Audit your current usage. Consider how many devices and data-intensive applications you use. More devices and data-heavy apps may need a higher speed plan.
  2. Connect with your ISP. Ask if your current plan still fits your needs. If not, look for a better NBN plan.
  3. Add a plan review to the calendar. Check your plan at least once a year to ensure it still works for you.
