Hayley LowerComparing Internet connections in your area
In today's digital world, a reliable and fast Internet connection really matters. To get the best connection, you have to check Internet availability in your area and that's where we can help.
At Compare Broadband, we've assisted many households in finding the best Internet provider for their needs and we’re here to help you, too.
Whether you're moving to a new area or looking to switch providers, we offer free, unbiased advice to help match you to the best Internet plan for your needs. With so many Internet plans and providers available in Australia, it can be overwhelming to choose or call ten different providers.
Not only do we have an easy-to-use comparison tool that lets you view plans from various providers, including costs, contract lengths, and features, we can save you time.
Instead of calling every provider individually, you can reach us through live chat or our call centre to use our free comparison service and get the answers you need in one place.
Connecting to an Internet plan in your area
Spending hours searching for the best Internet connection in your area will lead you to a lot of websites and a lot of opinions on what makes one provider better than the next.
Moving to a new area is a big enough job and you’ll feel far more settled when you have your Internet set up and ready. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to get up and running and with our help, it’s seamless.
So, what should you consider about the available Internet connections near you?
Availability
Service availability varies by provider and location. To confirm availability, you can contact our team today on 1300 764 000.
You can also use our handy tool; just enter your address in the search bar and click "Search plans."
Speed
The number of devices and what you do online determines your speed needs. Generally, 25 to 100 Mbps is a good speed range for the average household.
25 Mbps works for two devices without issues, while 50 to 100 Mbps lets you do more such as HD streaming, gaming, and working from home. You don’t have to pay extra for the fastest plan unless you really need it.
Reliability
Having a dependable Internet connection is crucial if you work online. Generally, fibre connections like NBN and private fibre are more reliable than wireless or satellite.
It's a good idea to read customer reviews to find out how reliable a provider's service is in your area.
Pricing
New customer discounts can make a plan seem like a great deal, but customers should always check the regular rates after the discount period expires.
Pricing considerations also include any installation costs, modem costs and early termination fees (if any).
It's also important to remember that the cheapest plan may not be the best plan for your needs. Sometimes, there's a difference of as little as $10 between speed tiers.
If you want to learn more, calling our team on 1300 764 000 is the best thing to do and we can talk you through the differences.
Customer service
Checking customer reviews helps you gauge how well an Internet provider handles customer problems. It’s a good idea to look at the support options the team offers, like chat, email, or an app, too.
Contact our call centre team for help and we can help you to find the right balance.
NBN plans in Australia
In Australia, there's a wide variety of NBN plans, such as NBN 12, NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100, NBN 250, and NBN 1000. Your specific NBN connection type will determine the speeds available to you. Once you know your available plans, you can then compare providers in your area.
There are also different connection types in Australia. For instance, fibre to the premises (FTTP) offers high typical evening speeds, while fibre to the node (FTTN) can vary in speed depending on the distance to the node.
When choosing a plan, consider both your speed needs and budget. Our experts can help you navigate your options, so feel free to reach out to us.
NBN 25 plans
Commonly known as Basic NBN, NBN 25 is suitable for regular home use or households with only 1-2 devices connected most of the time.
This plan provides speeds of up to 25Mbps, making it capable of handling high-quality video streaming, online gaming, and video calls without significant interruptions.

NBN 100 plans
With a premium evening speed offering of 100 Mbps, the NBN 100 is ideal for larger households with more devices connected to the Internet or requiring a faster NBN speed.
It is also recommended if you need to download and upload large files, stream videos in HD, play online games, or participate in video conferences simultaneously.
Although NBN 100 plans are at a premium, some providers offer limited-time discounts.

Private fibre network
You might have considered the NBN as your only choice for the Internet, but there's another option: private fibre networks.
Unlike the government-owned NBN, these networks are run by independent companies. When checking for Internet in my area, this may come up as an option.
While you can gain advantages like faster speeds and better reliability, private fibre network plans are not as widespread as the NBN, which covers the entire country.
Private fibre networks are often built for specific customers and serve areas like buildings, campuses, or specific regions within a state. Many of Australia's top ISPs provide various private network options.
Opticomm plans
In many new housing developments, the only Internet option available is a private fibre network, typically determined by the developer. One major player in this space is Opticomm, a private network wholesaler that primarily serves new residential estates across Australia.
ISPs can purchase bandwidth from Opticomm to provide Internet services to residents. Opticomm has acquired LBNco and OPEN networks, rebranding them under the Opticomm name.
Additionally, it acquired the Velocity network from Telstra. Retail providers offer Internet plans through Opticomm, providing download speeds and pricing similar to those offered by the NBN.

Moving to a new area?
When moving to a new home and relying on your Internet, minimising downtime is crucial. You can either bring your Internet provider with you or find a new one. If your current ISP doesn’t service your new address, here’s how to find the best Internet connection in my area:
- Set a moving date: Choose a firm moving date to plan around, allowing time to arrange disconnection and reconnection with your current provider or a new one. Providers may have backlogs, so the sooner you plan, the better.
- Check for ISP compatibility: Don't assume your new address is equipped for your current ISP. Check its compatibility with your provider to speed up the process.
- Choose a provider: Contact your chosen provider to inform them of your move, address, and moving date. If switching providers, set up an account and select a plan - and ask our experts for help doing it.
- Organise connection: Coordinate with your provider for a seamless transition. If staying with your current provider, arrange for the transfer of your service and inquire about any associated fees.
By following these steps, you can minimise Internet interruptions and ensure a smooth transition to your new home.
