Opticomm vs nbn®: What actually decides your connection
Take your Internet to the next level with Opticomm Fibre plans.
Opticomm and nbn® are both fibre networks, but you do not get to choose between them. Your street address determines which one connects your home. Switching from one to the other is not possible without a costly infrastructure change.

What is Opticomm?
It is a privately owned wholesale fibre network. It supplies fibre-to-the-premises connections to selected residential estates, new developments, and some commercial buildings.
It is a licensed telecommunications carrier, not a retail provider. This means it partners with retail providers who sell plans to households on its network. Every Opticomm connection is full fibre, since the network does not use copper, coaxial or wireless technology at all.
What does it cost?
If you’re connecting a newly constructed home to the Opticomm network for the first time, you may need to pay a New Development Charge (NDC) of between $300 and $550.
Before an Opticomm technician can complete the installation, the required lead-in cabling and internal wiring must be in place, which is generally the responsibility of the homeowner or builder.
If the technician arrives and the property is not ready for installation, Opticomm may charge a $150 Incorrect Callout Fee, and you’ll need to arrange another appointment once the required work has been completed.
How it differs from nbn®
The main difference is coverage and technology mix, not speed. nbn® reaches more than 12 million premises across Australia using a mix of fibre, copper, fixed wireless and satellite. Opticomm is fibre only, but it is limited to the estates that chose it during construction. nbn® connections are across more than one connection type.
| Network | Technology | Coverage | Can you choose? |
|---|---|---|---|
| nbn® | Fibre, copper, fixed wireless, satellitie | National | No, fixed by address |
| Opticomm | Fibre to the premises only | Selected estates and new developments | No, fixed by address |
If your nearby streets are on nbn® fibre to the node or fibre to the curb rather than Opticomm, full fibre is coming anyway. From July 2027, nbn Co will require full fibre upgrades for some FTTN and FTTC addresses. Providers will start contacting eligible homes from 1 July 2027, with copper switched off from January 2028. Check your FTTP upgrade eligibility (NBN Co, 2026).
Available speed tiers
Opticomm offers the same broad speed range as nbn® fibre, just under different names.
| Opticomm speed | nbn® equivalent | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 25/5 Mbps | nbn® 25 | Streaming on one or two devices |
| 50/20 Mbps | nbn® 50 | A share house or small family |
| 100/40 Mbps | nbn® 100 | Several heavy users at once |
| 250/25 Mbps | nbn® 250 | Large households, frequent big downloads |
| 1000/50 Mbps | nbn® 1000 | The fastest tier available on either network |
Can I switch from Opticomm to nbn®?
No. Once a property is connected to Opticomm or nbn®, you cannot switch networks. The only way a switch happens is if the property owner or developer funds a full infrastructure change. This almost never happens.
If you are unhappy with your current connection, it's better to compare providers and plans on your current connection. You can also check whether your issue is actually a slow internet or outage problem.
Choosing an Opticomm provider
Compare Broadband compares Opticomm plans from two providers, Aussie Broadband and Superloop. Both run on the same fibre network, so the plans themselves separate them as providers rather than the network used.
Compare current speed tiers and typical evening speeds through the Opticomm plan checker. This removes any assumptions about pricing, since providers update their offers regularly.

FAQs
Is Opticomm the same as nbn® FTTP?
They use the same fibre to the premises technology, but they are entirely separate networks with different owners. Your address is connected to one or the other, never both. Your internet connection is determined before you move in, but you can choose your provider.
Why do I have Opticomm instead of nbn®?
The developer of your estate chose to install Opticomm's private fibre network instead of connecting to nbn® during construction. This decision was made before you moved in and cannot be changed by residents.
What if my connection is slow or drops out?
Contact your provider first. Most performance issues come from plan congestion or an under-provisioned plan rather than the network itself. Upgrading your speed tier or switching providers, where more than one is available, usually resolves the issue.
