• Starlink is giving away its $549 hardware kit for free - but only if you commit to a 12-month plan.
  • Cancel early or make changes, and you could be hit with a fee.
  • Satellite Internet like Starlink works during power outages and performs better than Satellite NBN.

Starlink is offering a pretty tempting deal right now: a free satellite Internet kit (normally $549) if you sign up for the Residential plan. But before you get too excited, here’s what you need to know:

  • You’ll have to commit to a 12-month contract at $139/month.
  • You'll still pay $34 for shipping and handling.
  • If you cancel early or change your address, Starlink will charge you up to $549.

What’s in the kit?

The Starlink Kit includes a modem, satellite dish, and everything you need to get connected. Normally it costs $549, so getting it for free is a solid deal - if you're happy to stick with the service for at least a year.

How the 12-month commitment works

You’ll still get Starlink’s 30-day trial, so you can test the service first. If it’s not for you, send the kit back and walk away.

But once that trial ends, you’re locked in for a year. Cancel early, fail to return the kit, or even change your address, and Starlink could charge a “change fee” of up to $549. That fee reduces gradually as you get closer to the 12-month mark.

How fast is Starlink, really?

Starlink says its Residential plan can deliver:

  • Download speeds up to 270Mbps
  • Upload speeds up to 40Mbps
  • Latency between 25–80ms

But what’s the real-world performance like?

According to the ACCC’s latest Measuring Broadband Australia Report, Starlink users in Australia saw:

  • Average download speed of 192Mbps at all times
  • 165.5Mbps during peak hours (7pm–11pm)
  • Upload speeds averaging 28.6Mbps off-peak and 27.8Mbps during peak
  • That’s significantly faster than Satellite NBN, especially when it counts.

Why choose Satellite Internet?

Satellite Internet used to be a last resort. But thanks to Starlink, it's now a fast, reliable option, even in rural and remote areas. Here’s why more Aussies are making the switch:

No more buffering

Stream Netflix, play games online, or video call without the painful lag that came with older satellite services.

Stays online in power cuts

Unlike fixed-line Internet that relies on local infrastructure, Starlink’s satellite network doesn’t go down in a blackout - a game-changer for off-grid homes or bushfire-prone areas.

Works almost anywhere

From the outback to coastal towns, if you’ve got a clear view of the sky, you’ve got Internet.
