The cheapest plan is not always the best deal

Cheap internet plans can save $20 to $30 per month compared to mid-tier speed options. However, some providers cut costs in ways that affect daily performance and faster speeds. Three things to check before choosing on price alone:

Slow speeds

The entry-level speed tier is nbn® 25 plans, at up to 25 Mbps download. For a single user doing light browsing, email and occasional streaming it is adequate. Two people streaming in HD at the same time will experience buffering.

For households with more than two active users, or those with remote workers, nbn® 50 plans are the minimum worth considering.

Reliability

Some budget internet providers manage network capacity more tightly during peak hours.

This can produce slower-than-expected speeds on evenings and weekends even on higher speed tier plans. On nbn® 100, the gap between a budget provider and a performance provider can be 30 to 40 Mbps during peak hours (ACCC, 2025).

Poor customer service

Budget providers typically offer digital-only support. Response times can be longer and fault resolution can take more time than with premium providers.

TIO complaint volumes are a useful indicator of service quality. Higher complaint rates relative to subscriber base signal that problems are more common and harder to resolve (TIO, 2025).

What to check before signing up for a budget broadband plan

Three things to verify before committing to any cheap NBN Sydney plans:

 

What to check Why it matters
Ongoing rate after the introductory period Most discounts last a limited period. The standard rate is what you pay for the rest of the plan term. Always check what the plan reverts to after any promotional period ends.
Speed tier Lower speed tiers are more affordable but may not suit all households. Higher tiers generally provide a better experience for households with multiple users or heavy streaming and browsing needs.
Modem costs Some plans require purchasing a new modem. Even if a plan appears cheaper upfront, additional hardware costs can increase the overall cost in the first year.

Promotional pricing is common across providers including Dodo and Tangerine. You'll find regularly run six-month discounts of $10 to $20 per month off the standard rate. Always calculate the 12-month total, not just the promotional price before you commit.

Tangerine internet plans

Tangerine keeps things simple, offering straightforward broadband plans without a lot of extras or complications. It generally targets people who just want an internet connection that supports everyday use.

Lower-tier plans like nbn® 25 are usually fine for light use. This includes browsing, email, social media, and streaming on one device at a time.

If you need more speed for multiple people or heavier streaming, nbn® 50 can make a clear difference. It won’t change much else about your setup.

Tangerine Telecom often changes prices for new customers. This can make the first few months cheaper. After that, prices return to the standard rates.

The best ways to cut your broadband costs in Sydney are to switch providers.

  2. Choose the right speed tier. Paying for nbn® 100 when your household only needs nbn® 50 wastes $10 to $15 per month.

Are cheap nbn® plans slower?

Not necessarily on paper, but often in practice. Budget providers offer nbn® 100 plans at lower prices than premium providers. The variable is the usual evening speed. Some deliver 80 Mbps or more at peak hours. Others deliver much less on the same plan tier. Compare typical evening speed alongside price on Compare Broadband before signing up.

Who offers cheaper 5G home internet plans in Sydney?
