If you want fast, reliable, and future-proof internet, NBN 100 plans-also called Premium Evening Speed plans-are the way to go.

These plans are ideal for households with heavy internet usage, including streaming multiple HD or 4K videos, online gaming, video conferencing, and uploading or downloading large files.

However, not all NBN 100 plans are identical. Providers may advertise the same speed tier, but typical evening speeds and performance can vary.

That’s why it’s important to compare different NBN 100 plans before choosing the one that suits your household.

NBN 100 plans are NBN's fastest and most widely available speed tier. These plans are ideal for large households and internet users who regularly upload or download large files.

When choosing an NBN provider, you have to consider whether they are connected to the fastest speed.

The good news is that the ACCC has made it a lot easier. All ISPs are now required to advertise their typical evening speeds, especially those that offer fixed-line NBN plans (Fibre-to-the-Premises, Fibre-to-the-Node, Fibre-to-the-Building, Hybrid Fibre Coaxial, and Fibre-to-the-Curb). But, unfortunately, most of them are found to have noticeably lower speeds than the NBN plan's maximum speeds.

What NBN 100 plans offer

NBN 100 plans deliver:

  • Download speed: Up to 100 Mbps
  • Upload speed: Up to 40 Mbps

This makes them perfect for large households, home offices, or small businesses. With NBN 100, multiple users can:

  • Stream HD and 4K Netflix or Disney+ simultaneously
  • Play online games with minimal lag
  • Upload large files to cloud storage quickly
  • Conduct video conferences or online classes with no interruptions

Top tip: While NBN 100 is widely available, check your provider’s typical evening speeds, which indicate actual speeds during peak usage (7-11pm). Your connection may vary depending on your NBN technology, distance from the node, and network congestion.

Who should get NBN 100?

NBN 100 is ideal for:

  • Large households (3–6 people): Supports multiple devices and users simultaneously
  • Gamers: Fast download and upload speeds reduce lag and speed up game downloads
  • Content creators or home office users: Uploading high-resolution videos, using cloud-based software, and sharing large files is seamless
  • Streaming enthusiasts: Enjoy multiple 4K streams at once without buffering

If your household is smaller or you don’t heavily use the internet, NBN 50 may still be sufficient-but NBN 100 gives extra speed headroom and a more consistent connection for peak times.

Best NBN 100 plans

NBN 100 plans let you stream multiple Netflix streams simultaneously, even at the highest resolution. On the other hand, gamers will also appreciate the extra speed to download larger games and updates.

Upload bandwidth is helpful for cloud backups for files like high-resolution images and Full HD and/or 4K videos. It's also the ideal plan for sole traders and small businesses who require to upload and share small or large files with clients or use cloud storage and software.

NBN 100 plans are also called "Premium" NBN plans since they offer premium upload and download speeds.

Is NBN 100 worth it?

NBN 100 plans are a premium option for households that demand fast, reliable, and high-capacity internet.

While NBN 50 may suffice for smaller households, NBN 100 gives extra speed and stability, especially during evening peak hours.

  1. Distance from node matters: For FTTN connections, homes within 400 meters of the node can reach full speeds, while those further away may experience slower performance.
  2. Network congestion: Peak time usage in your area can temporarily slow speeds.
  3. Wi-Fi performance: Walls, furniture, and household appliances can affect your Wi-Fi signal. Using a modern router or wired connection can help maximise NBN 100 performance.

How do I choose the right NBN plan?

Nearly every internet service provider that offers NBN services has the NBN 100 plans as their top-rung option. However, only a few telcos offer the NBN 250 or NBN 1000 superfast options.

It's also worth checking your connection type before signing up for a provider - such as a hybrid fibre coaxial cable (HFC) or a fibre-to-the-node connection (FTTN). Also, ask the telco if the connection is suitable for the speed tier. You may be able to try their service for a free trial period.

There are several things you should consider when choosing a plan.

  • How much data you'll need
  • What speed will you need
  • Your monthly budget

Everybody wants to have the fastest connection. However, it may come with a price. At the end of the day, you want an internet plan sufficient enough to cater to your online activities. Compare NBN plans that are within your budget to plan your monthly internet budget.

A capped NBN plan will be more suitable if you use the internet only to connect to social media. An unlimited data plan, on the other hand, would be more suitable for heavy users who engage in streaming activities such as binge-watching Netflix or playing online games.

Is it worth getting NBN 100?

NBN plans advertise a maximum speed of up to 100 Mbps, but your connection may be slower than what you are paying for.

If you've got a Fibre to the Node NBN connection, you may experience slower-than-advertised speeds due to your home's distance from the node. Customers located within 400m of a node will be able to receive speeds up to 100Mbps while those who are further away than 700m may experience significant speed degradation.

Another possible reason for slowing down is congestion. It's possible that you are experiencing slower speeds during certain times. This could be because everyone in your neighbourhood is watching high definition videos simultaneously.

FAQs

Do I need a Premium Evening Speed plan?

If multiple users in your household frequently stream, game, or upload large files simultaneously, a Premium NBN 100 plan is highly recommended.

What is the difference between download and upload speeds?

Download speed measures how quickly data comes from the internet to your device, while upload speed measures how fast you can send data from your device to the internet. NBN 100 provides fast speeds for both directions, making it ideal for cloud storage, video calls, and gaming.

Will my Premium Evening Speed plan ever stop working?

NBN outages are rare but can occur due to maintenance or inclement weather. Regular checks of your provider’s status page and ensuring your hardware is functioning will help maintain performance.
