• Telstra Smart Modem 4 includes Wi-Fi 7 and a 5G backup connection for added reliability.
  • Supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, but lacks 6GHz and multigigabit ports.
  • Ideal for most NBN plans but not suited for upcoming NBN 2000 speed tiers.

Telstra has introduced its latest Smart Modem 4, designed to support the next phase of Internet upgrades across Australia. Built with the newest wireless technology, this modem is aimed at both personal and business users.

The standout feature is the inclusion of Wi-Fi 7, replacing the older Wi-Fi 6 tech found in the previous generation. The modem also includes a built-in 5G backup, which automatically kicks in if your fixed-line Internet connection goes down. This feature is available to customers on Telstra’s Upfront Internet plans.

5G backup available

The 5G backup isn’t lightning fast, but it’s more than enough for everyday browsing, streaming, and work tasks. Speeds are limited to 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads, ensuring a smooth transition when the main connection is unavailable.

Although it supports Wi-Fi 7, the modem sticks to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. It doesn’t include the newer 6GHz band, which is more common in higher-end routers. That said, Telstra's modem is priced at $240 outright, or free if you remain on an eligible plan for 24 months, making it a reasonably affordable option.

The inclusion of Wi-Fi 7 allows for Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which enables compatible devices to connect across multiple frequency bands simultaneously. This can help maintain a more stable connection in environments with potential interference.

While Telstra promotes the modem as capable of faster Wi-Fi speeds, exact performance figures aren't provided. The device includes one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports, and a USB 2.0 slot, offering decent wired connectivity.

However, without multigigabit Ethernet ports, the modem isn’t equipped to fully handle the upcoming NBN 2000 speed tiers expected to roll out in September. It’s suitable for faster Internet plans, but those looking for the absolute top-tier speeds might find it limiting.
