NBN Co has completed a $750 million program aimed at improving broadband speed and reliability for regional and remote Australia.
The NBN Fixed Wireless and Satellite Upgrade Program upgraded equipment at over 2,300 towers to enhance wholesale speeds across the NBN and Fixed Wireless networks.
This upgrade will benefit around 800,000 homes and businesses, providing faster speeds, even during peak periods, and introducing two new high-speed plans through participating retail service providers.
The new plans offer peak wholesale NBN download speeds up to five times faster than previously available.
NBN Sky Muster customers access Fixed Wireless
On top of this, more than 120,000 homes and businesses that were previously served by the NBN Sky Muster satellite service now have access to NBN Fixed Wireless for the first time.
The project was financed with a total cost of A$750 million, consisting of $480 million from the Federal Government and $270 million from NBN Co.
This completion follows the announcement that NBN Co and the Federal Government will invest $3.8 billion to upgrade 622,000 premises still using FTTN technology, including 300,000 in regional areas.
The upgrade marks the culmination of over two years of work, overcoming challenges like remote access, extreme weather conditions, and wildlife interactions with the towers.
Higher speeds, better connectivity
The new infrastructure ensures higher speeds and more reliable connections, particularly in busy periods, allowing households and businesses to use multiple devices more effectively.
Around 120,000 homes and businesses that were previously reliant on satellite connections can now transition to Fixed Wireless, freeing up capacity on the satellite network to introduce uncapped data use plans for those remaining on satellite.
