The fastest nbn® plans in Australia run on the nbn® 500, nbn® 1000 and nbn® 2000 speed tiers, available on FTTP and HFC connections.

Everyone wants the fastest internet Australia has to offer, but the best nbn® speed has to be balanced with the best value. Fastest speeds may be great for fast downloads, but do you really need it? And how accurate are the current nbn® 500 plans?

Well, during December 2025, services on the nbn® 500 tier averaged 493.7 Mbps during busy hours (ACCC, 2026). If you're asking how fast is nbn® 500, it's as fast as it claims to be. Whether you're a gamer or you're working remotely from home, the biggest plus is finding a plan that offers reliable speeds.

The fastest nbn® speed tiers

The nbn® network offers four speed tiers above the standard 50 Mbps. All four require an FTTP or HFC connection. As of September 2025, nbn® Co upgraded all existing nbn® 100 plans on eligible FTTP and HFC connections to nbn® 500. This didn't cost anything extra, which is a nice perk for anyone on a budget.

When comparing speeds, we believe the best thing to do is assess your household's needs first. If it's just you and you just send emails and watch a little Netflix, you likely won't need to pay big money for a nbn® 500 plan. But if your home is busy, packed with streamers and gamers and needs fast downloads, higher tiers make sense.

Please note: The fastest broadband Australia has to offer isn't necessarily what will bring you value!

Speed tier Max download Max upload Typical evening speeds Who it suits
nbn® 500 500 Mbps 50 Mbps 493 Mbps Heavy streaming, multiple users, home offices
nbn® 1000 1,000 Mbps 100 Mbps Varies by provider Power uses, home businesses, 4K on multiple screens
nbn® 2000 2,000 Mbps 200 Mbps (FTTP) Limited rollout Multi-gigabit households, future-proofing

*Based on ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Report 31, December 2025 (ACCC, 2026).

Across all nbn® fixed-line services, providers delivered an average of 98.5% of plan speeds during busy hours. For nbn® 500 specifically, 80.5% of services recorded a busy hour speed exceeding 500 Mbps (ACCC, 2026).

Not sure which tier your address supports? That's what we're here for. Compare plans at your address using the Compare Broadband plan checker or call 1300 764 000.

For most households, nbn® 500 is the sweet spot. This is especially the case if you love movies and you work from home. Remote workers need all the speed help they can get, particularly if that Teams call button keeps going off!

If you are weighing up whether the upgrade cost is worth it for your situation, we have a guide to help.

Which providers offer faster plans?

Compare Broadband works with the following providers across the faster speed tiers. We can't stress enough that the fastest nbn® provider may not necessarily be right for you in terms of cost or service. So, in this case, comparison is what brings joy - not steals it.

Internet speeds are vital to pay attention to, but so is customer service. If you're on the list for the mandatory Fibre to the Premises 2027 switch over, you need a solid service. You can read more about the forced fibre upgrades here. So, which providers offer you the stable internet connections you need?

What connection type do you need?

Not all connection types support the faster speed tiers. Knowing your connection type is essential if you enjoy a solid internet service. There are different types of nbn® connection, so check your address to see what's available.

What connection type do I need for nbn® 500?

You need to look beyond speed tiers and to the connection type in your home before you sign up to anything. Fibre to the premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre coaxial HFC can access all four tiers. FTTN, FTTC and Fixed Wireless are capped at lower speeds.

Connection type nbn® 500 nbn® 1000 nbn® 2000 Notes
FTTP (fibre to the premises) Yes Yes Yes Full tier access, Eligible for free upgrade where available
HFC (hybrid fibre coaxial) Yes Yes Limited Most metro HFC supports 500 and 1000
FTTN (fibre to the node) No No No Capped at nbn® 50 or 100 depending on line quality
FTTC (fibre to the curb) No  No No Capped at nbn® 100
Fixed wireless No No No Max 75 Mbps typical evening speed

Do I need FTTP for the fastest nbn® speeds?

It helps! If you are on FTTN or FTTC, check whether you are eligible for a free FTTP upgrade. Many properties have become eligible since the government fibre rollout expansion.

Choosing the right speed for your household

The right tier depends on how many people are online simultaneously and what they are doing. Remote workers always appreciate faster speeds but mostly, it's whether they're reliably fast or not that's the question. The nbn® service you get when connecting devices is as important as the speed your household needs.

Household type Recommended tieer Why
1-2 people, light use nbn® 50 or 100 Handles HD streaming and video calls without buffering
2-4 people, mixed use nbn® 100-500 Supports simultaneous streaming, gaming and remote work
4+ people, heavy use nbn® 500 or 1000 Multiple 4K streams, large uploads, low latency gaming
Home business/power users nbn® 1000 or 2000 Maximum speeds for video production, cloud backup, VoIP

FAQs

What is the fastest nbn® plan in Australia?

The nbn® 2000 (Home Hyperfast) plan offers the highest speeds at up to 2,000 Mbps download. However, as impressive as it sounds it has limited availability and is currently only available on FTTP connections. The nbn® 1000 plan is more widely available on both FTTP and HFC connections.

Do I need FTTP to get the fastest nbn® speeds?

Yes. FTTP is the only connection type that supports all four of the faster speed tiers including nbn® 2000. HFC supports nbn® 500 and nbn® 1000 widely. FTTN and FTTC cannot access these tiers.

How do I know if I am getting my plan speed?

Run a speed test during busy hours (7pm to 11pm) using a wired connection to your modem. Compare the result to your plan's typical evening speed figure. If you are consistently falling short, contact your provider.

Can I switch providers to access faster speeds?

Yes. If your connection type supports a faster tier and your current provider does not offer it, why not switch? Switching nbn® providers is straightforward. Most switches complete within one to two business days with no service interruption on compatible technologies.

What is a typical evening speed?

Typical evening speed is the download speed a plan delivers to at least 50% of customers between 7pm and 11pm. It is a more reliable performance indicator than the maximum speed advertised on a plan. ACCC data from December 2025 shows nbn® 500 services averaged 493.7 Mbps during this period (ACCC, 2026).

Are you eligible for a FREE fibre upgrade?

The government is making 1.5 million Australian homes and businesses eligible for a speed upgrade to FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), which offers greater speed and reliability. Selected towns and suburbs with FTTC and FTTN are eligible for the upgrade with an eligible high speed nbn plan.
