How to choose the right nbn® plan

Start with two things: your connection type and how many people are online at once. Everything else is a refinement.

• Check your connection type first. It caps which speed tiers are physically available to you. See our nbn® connection types guide for the six network types and how to check yours.
• Count concurrent users, not just people in the house. A share house with four people streaming at once needs more headroom than a single remote worker.
• Compare providers on reliability and support, not headline speed alone. Every provider sells access to the same underlying nbn® network.
• Confirm modem inclusions before you sign up. Some plans include a compatible modem, others expect you to supply your own.

nbn® speed tiers explained

nbn® now runs seven speed tiers, and which ones you can access depends entirely on your connection type, not your provider.

nbn® 100 used to be the top tier on fibre and cable. Since September 2025, nbn Co upgraded eligible FTTP and HFC services.

This made nbn® 500 the new entry point to its fastest tiers. There is no extra cost. FTTN, FTTC and FTTB addresses still cap around nbn® 100 until the address is upgraded to full fibre.

How 6 month intro pricing really works

Most of the best nbn® providers advertise a discounted rate for the first six months. Beyond this, those prices then step up to a higher ongoing rate. Compare the total cost over time, not just the headline number.

• Add the intro period and the ongoing period together to see the real yearly cost, not just the first six months.
• Check whether a modem is included or charged separately, and for how long. A handful of plans bundle a modem into an 18-to-36-month commitment with an early exit fee if you leave before it ends. • Ask about new development fees if you are the first occupant to connect at your address. nbn® and Opticomm both apply a standard one-off charge that is the same regardless of provider. See how much does nbn® installation cost for full details.
• Prices through Compare Broadband are the same as going direct to the provider. There are no mark-ups or additional fees.

Is your connection due for a free upgrade?

If your address is on FTTN or FTTC, nbn Co may upgrade you to full fibre at no cost under its Targeted Upgrade Program.

• Notification letters begin from July 2027.
• Copper suspensions are not expected before January 2028. They will be used only as a last resort. This will happen after multiple notices. You will also have the option to defer.
• You do not need to already be on a high-speed plan to qualify.
• FTTB apartment buildings are not part of this program.

Why your nbn® might be underperforming

A slow connection usually has one of six fixable causes. These are congestion, your speed tier, distance from the node, your modem, wireless interference or your device.
