1. Parasite

Synopsis: Originally released in 2019, Parasite became the breakout movie of 2020 after it won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards in February. The film follows the story of two families — the Kim’s and the Park’s — whose paths cross when the son of the Kim family applies to be an English tutor for the Park family’s daughter.

Why watch it?

Parasite has Bong Joon-ho’s trademark style of excellent writing and directing, plus the ever-reliable acting chops of his seemingly favourite collaborator, Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer and The Host). Shortly after it won big at the Oscars, it was announced that HBO acquired the rights to release a limited series based on the film.

2. Joker

Synopsis: Joker is a psychological thriller film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the title character popularized by DC Comics. It follows the story of Arthur Fleck aka Joke, a stand-up comedian whose insanity caused him to wage a revolution against the wealthy residents of Gotham City.

Why watch it?

Joaquin Phoenix was great in his portrayal of a person suffering from a psychiatric disorder, leading him to win the Best Actor plum at the 92nd Academy Awards. He is currently the second actor to win the award for the role Joker, following Heath Ledger in 2009.

3. Marriage Story

Synopsis: This 2019 drama movie follows the story of theatre director Charlie Barber and his wife, theatre actress Nicole, as they go through the ups and downs of marriage. Adam Driver plays the role of Charlie, while Scarlett Johansson portrays the character of Nicole.

Why watch it?

The film made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, followed by screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The performances of both Driver and Johansson as a couple undergoing the painful process of divorce were lauded by critics.

4. Toy Story 4

Synopsis: Toy Story 4 is the fourth and possibly the final instalment in Disney’s Toy Story franchise. The movie picks up from the story of Toy Story 3, with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the other toys starting a new life with Andy’s neighbour, Bonnie.

Why watch it?

Toy Story 4 is the highest-grossing instalment of the franchise, which banked on the extreme popularity of the first three movies, the last of which was released nine years prior. It also gives long-time fans of the franchise some sort of closure between Andy and his childhood toys as they pursue separate paths.

5. Rocketman

Synopsis: Rocketman is a 2019 biographical movie based on the life of legendary musician Elton John. Taron Egerton of The Kingsman fame plays the role of Elton John, alongside actors Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Why watch it?

Rocketman is considered by critics as one of the best films released in 2019. Egerton was also praised not only for his acting but also for his vocal performance, giving justice to the character. The movie received standing ovations from the audience during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and Academy screening.

6. Judy

Synopsis: Judy is a biopic that tells on the life story of singer and actress Judy Garland. Renee Zellweger leads the cast of this film adaptation of the West End and Broadway play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter.

Why watch it?

The movie centres on the last year of Garland’s life and career and throws in some flashbacks to the singer’s teenage years when she played Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz and skyrocketed to fame. Zellwegger drew critical acclaim for her portrayal of Judy Garland, which was described as “the performance of the year” by Peter Travers of the Rolling Stone magazine.

7. Brooklyn

Synopsis: Brooklyn is a romantic period drama film directed by John Crowley and written by Nick Hornby. Based on the 2009 novel by Colm Toibin, it tells the story of Eilis Lacey, a young Irishwoman who moves to Brooklyn to find a job and pursue the life of an independent woman. Saoirse Ronan plays the starring role and is joined by Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, and Julie Walters.

Why watch it?

The movie received a standing ovation when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015. It is considered one of the best films released that year, with a focus on the outstanding performance of Ronan and Cohen.

8. Capone

Synopsis: Capone is a biographical movie starring Tom Hardy as the eponymous Al Capone. It follows the story of the notorious gangster and businessman after he has served his 11-year sentence at the United States Penitentiary.

Why watch it?

The film lends an eye to the life story of Al Capone, particularly the time he was living in Florida while suffering dementia and neurosyphilis. Hardy was praised for his exceptional performance in the film, although the script written by Josh Trank drew mixed reactions. Zellweger won Best Actress at the 92nd Academy Awards for her role.

9. Between Two Ferns: The Movie

Synopsis: Between Two Ferns: The Movie is a comedy film starring Zach Galifianakis. It is based on the web series of the same name, which he also hosted. In the movie, Galifianakis dreams of becoming a star but instead becomes a laughingstock after Will Ferrell uploaded his video to Funny or Die.

Why watch it?

Fans of Zach Galifianakis and the Between Two Ferns program will definitely enjoy the movie adaptation of the show. The movie stays true to the flavour and approach of the original talk show and features Galifianakis’ comedic prowess.

10. Wildlife

Synopsis: Wildlife is a drama film featuring Paul Dano (12 Years A Slave and Love & Mercy) in his directorial debut. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan, and Ed Oxenbould. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Ford.

Why watch it?

The movie received critical acclaim for the performance of Mulligan and Gyllenhaal as the Brinson couple who recently moved to Montana with their teenage son. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and was also described as a “superb film” and a “domestic drama both sad and terrifying” by Glenn Kenny of the New York Times.

11. While We’re Young

Synopsis: While We’re Young is a comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by Noah Baumbach. It features the ensemble cast of documentary filmmaker Josh Srebnick (Ben Stiller), his wife Cornelia (Naomi Watts), and the young couple Jamie and Darby Massey (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, respectively), with whom they become friends with.

Why watch it?

The movie premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Festival and received praise from critics primarily for Noah Baumbach’s ability to write funny lines while also touching on serious topics. Also worth noting is the film’s musical score composed by James Murphy.

12. Creep 2

Synopsis: Creep 2 is a 2017 found footage psychological horror film directed by Patrick Brice. It’s the sequel to the equally horrifying movie, Creep (2014), and follows Brice and Mark Duplass, who also co-wrote the story. Creep 2 centres on a serial killer called Aaron, who is undergoing a midlife crisis.

Why watch it?

The film was praised for its writing, dark humour, as well as the performances of Duplass and his co-stars Desiree Akhavan and Karan Soni.  It premiered at the Sitges Film Festival in 2017, with a third instalment scheduled to follow sometime later.
