Types of NBN connections in Whyalla

The NBN stands for the National Broadband Network, and it is a countrywide upgrade to Australia’s internet infrastructure. In a nutshell, this upgrade is achieved by the NBN Co replacing Australia’s old copper line internet infrastructure, which was a hand-me-down from our old telephone line network, and replaces it with a typically faster and generally more reliable fibre optic cable network. If your home or office already has the NBN service, you can compare the best Whyalla NBN plans and providers here. If you do not know if/when your premises will be NBN ready, scroll down and enter your address into our free NBN rollout map below. Be sure to enter your full and accurate address in order to receive full and accurate results. The map will tell you if your home is NBN ready, and if it is not, it will tell you approximately when you can expect your upgrade. Either way, the map will be able to tell you what manner of NBN connection type has been allocated to your area.

The NBN is a Multi Technology Mix (often referred to as an “MTM” for short) which means that there are several different kinds of NBN connection types that are made from different technologies. This happened after a change in Federal Government, which resulted in budget cuts to the NBN’s rollout. It’s been found that some NBN connections do not work as well as others, but unfortunately, NBN customers do not get to choose what kind of NBN connection is installed in their premises. This decision (which is now informally known as the NBN Lottery)  is made by the NBN Co, and the NBN connection type that is installed in your residence will be based on your location. However, if your find that your NBN performance speed is lacking because of your NBN connection type, you may wish to counter it by upgrading to an NBD plan that has unlimited NBN data, or one that is on a faster NBN speed tier. Conversely, you may wish to see if alternative home broadband connections are available to your location, such as Home Wireless. The NBN service is now prominently available in Whyalla. The different kinds of NBN connection types found in Whalla include Fixed Wireless, HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node).

Step 1 icon

Fibre to the premises / home

When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home

Step 2 icon

Fibre to the node

Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).

Step 2 icon

Fixed wireless connection

In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
