Advantages of no contract nbn® plans
Here is what you actually get with a month-to-month plan:
- Switch providers without exit fees. This is ideal if your current provider’s service or pricing disappoints.
- The ACCC has flagged unfair contract terms in the telco sector for years. Month-to-month plans remove that exposure. (ACCC, 2022)
- Move home without penalty. Cancel, reconnect at the new address, no fuss. The type of nbn® you get is decided by your address.
- Downgrade or upgrade speed tiers as your needs change. If you are unsure which tier suits you, start with nbn® 50 and upgrade to nbn® 100 later if needed. No lock-in means no penalty for changing.
- Take advantage of introductory offers from competing providers more easily.
- No multi-year commitment, which matters if your circumstances are in flux (renting, new job location, travelling).
Lock in plans used to be the norm, but now providers across the board opt for no contract instead. This means that you can find a plan and provider that suits you with ease.
What nbn® speed do I need?
| Speed tier | Best for |
| nbn® 50 | 1-2 people, light household streaming |
| nbn® 100 | Families, HD streaming, standard WFH |
| nbn® 250 | Multiple WFH users, heavy streaming across multiple devices |
| nbn® 500 | High-demand homes, large file transfers and uploads |
| nbn® 1000 | Maximum demand, future-proofed whole home connectivity |
Note: nbn® 1000 is only available on FTTP and HFC connections. Check your address eligibility before comparing plans.
Temporary internet options
If nbn® is not yet connected at your address, or you need internet for a short period, there are a few alternatives. See our home wireless broadband guide for a full comparison.
Mobile hotspot
A mobile hotspot uses your phone’s 4G or 5G data to share internet with other devices.
It’s portable and quick to set up, making it useful while waiting for an nbn® connection to be installed. Keep in mind: mobile hotspot is not ideal for heavy data users. Video streaming and large downloads drain data allowances quickly, and speeds vary depending on your mobile coverage.
Home wireless broadband
Providers such as Optus offer home wireless broadband plans that use 4G or 5G networks instead of nbn® fixed line. These are month-to-month and available at addresses where fixed-line nbn® is not available or being upgraded. Typical download speeds are 14–50 Mbps depending on your location.
Public Wi-Fi
Libraries, cafes, shopping centres and some public spaces offer free Wi-Fi. Fine for light browsing, but not suitable for video calls, streaming or anything involving sensitive accounts. If you do use public Wi-Fi, a VPN will protect your data.
How to switch to a no contract nbn® plan
Switching is simpler than most people expect. Use our comparison tool to filter by speed tier, price and provider, then follow the steps below:
- Compare plans using the tool on this page. Filter by speed tier, price and provider.
- Check your address eligibility. Confirm the speed tier and connection type available at your premises.
- Sign up with your chosen provider. Most no-contract plans activate within 1–3 business days if nbn® is already connected.
- Cancel your old plan. With most month-to-month plans, you can cancel before the next billing cycle without penalty.

FAQs
Which internet providers offer no contract nbn® plans?
Most major Australian providers offer month-to-month plans. This includes Aussie Broadband, Superloop, Tangerine Telecom, Dodo, TPG, Optus and Telstra. Use the comparison tool on this page to see what is available at your address.
How does no contract nbn® work?
You sign up for a monthly plan with no minimum term beyond that single month. You are billed each month and can cancel any time before the next billing date with no exit fees. The plan continues automatically until you cancel or switch.
Can I get Wi-Fi without a contract?
Yes. Month-to-month nbn® plans include standard Wi-Fi via the modem provided or your own BYO modem. You are not locked into any particular length of service.
What is better: nbn® or mobile broadband?
For most households, fixed-line nbn® will outperform mobile broadband for consistent speed, low latency and data capacity. Mobile broadband is useful as a temporary solution or at addresses where fixed-line nbn® is not available. Check your local mobile coverage before deciding.
Are no contract plans more expensive than lock-in plans?
Sometimes slightly, but the difference has shrunk. Many providers now price month-to-month plans, using introductory discounts rather than contract length as the main variable. Compare plans directly on this page to check current pricing.
Can I use my own modem with a no contract plan?
Yes. Most providers support BYO modem. Check the plan details before signing up, as some providers only support specific modem models. BYO modem can reduce setup costs, particularly on plans that charge for hardware.
Can I get internet for one month only?
Yes. Month-to-month nbn® plans let you sign up and cancel after one month. Check whether the provider charges an activation fee and confirm the cancellation terms before signing up. A prepaid mobile broadband SIM with a 28-day recharge is another option for very short-term needs.
How can I get Wi-Fi without paying monthly?
Most nbn® providers bill monthly. Some mobile broadband providers offer 90-day or annual recharge options, which reduce billing frequency. For very light use, public Wi-Fi at libraries or council facilities is free.
