Be sure to write your full and correct address in order to get the most accurate results. The NBN is a countrywide initiative that was spearheaded by the Australian Government with the aim of upgrading Australia’s internet infrastructure. This is effectively achieved by replacing the nation’s old copper-line based internet infrastructure (which was built for our old landline telephone networks) with a generally faster, more reliable fibre optic cable network.
While the initial plan was to have fibre optic cables running directly into every home in Australia, this plan was ultimately deemed by the Federal Government to be too expensive, and the NBN was subsequently converted into a Multi Technology Mix (MTM). In a nutshell, this means that rather than there being one standard NBN connection, there are several different versions that run on different technologies. Some of the different NBN connection types found around Prahran include Fixed Wireless, FTTB (Fibre to the Basement), FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial), and FTTN (Fibre to the Node). The primary problem with the Multi Technology Mix is that some NBN connection types don’t work as well as others, and you don’t get to choose which NBN connection type is installed in your home. The good news, however, is that you do get quite a lot of say in choosing the finer details of your NBN plan, such as your NBN data amount, your NBN speed, your NBN contract length, and how much you want to spend on your NBN per month.
Fibre to the premises / home
When the NBN project initially commenced, the government at the time intended to roll out fibre optic cabling all the way up to your home or business property. This type of connection is call Fibre to the premises/home
Fibre to the node
Mid-way through the NBN roll-out, a change in Government leadership saw some funding constraints which lead to a slightly different roll-out approach for the NBN. This approach involves an amalgamation of original copper systems and fibre optic systems. This is referred to as Fibre to the node (FTTN).
Fixed wireless connection
In some cases - particularly in remote locations - it would be impractical or too expensive to physically connect a property to the fibre-optic network. In such cases properties will be connected by a wireless network. This is referred to as a Fixed Wireless NBN connection.
